Whitfield County is a county located in northwest Georgia at the Southern end of the Appalachian. It shares a northern border with Tennessee and covers nearly 290 square miles. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, Whitfield’s population was approximately 103 359. The county seat of Whitfield County is Dalton, which is also the largest city in the County. The County was part of Murray County in 1851 and was named for the first Englishman who visited Georgia in 1738, Reverend George Whitefield. 

In 1740, George Whitefield created the Bethseda orphan home near Savannah. Later, the state legislatures, during the writing of the act that created the CountyCounty, omitted the “e” in the Whitefield to reflect the correct pronunciation of the name. 

The opening of the first large-scale manufacturing plant in 1884, the cotton mill, pushed the economic and industrial growth of Whitfield County.

Criminal Investigation Division 

The Criminal Investigation Division, which is under the direct command of Captain Paul Woods, comprises five sections; 

  • General Investigation Division 

The detectives assigned to this division are responsible for investigating all unsolved criminal cases reported to the Sheriff’s Office.   • Narcotics Division 

This division takes responsibility for investigating all narcotics-related offenses within the CountyCounty. The Narcotics Division comprises seven detectives who carry out search warrants, oversee asses for features of drug money and assist with vice-related investigations. Often, these investigators participate in Task Force operations with other local, state, and federal agencies, which generally target the arrest of major traffickers or confiscation of large amounts of contraband. 

  • Evidence Division 

The Evidence Division comprises two crime scene investigators and one civilian evidence clerk. Typically, they provide specialized expertise in evidence collection and documentation, analysis of major crime scenes, and assistance with a patrol when required. In addition, an evidence clerk also oversees the proper entry and storage of collected information, documenting and releasing the property to the appropriate owner. 

  • Permits/ Records Division 

The Record Division personnel assist the public with obtaining copies of incident and accident reports, ink fingerprinting, background checks to verify whether the required ID is valid, expungements, and open requests. Additionally, this personnel helps the citizens with general inquiries via telephone and e-mail. 

  • Sex Offender Registry Division 

The Sex Offender Registry Division comprises two civilian personnel and one investigator who maintains the sex offender registry for Whitfield County. They also handle changes, additions, and deletions from the registry with coordination from the GBI and other counties and states. The Sex Offender Registry is an awareness tool for the public’s use to gain information regarding convicted sex offenders within the CountyCounty and state.
