Wayne County, Georgia’s twenty-seventh county, was created in 1803 in the southeast part of the state on land acquired from Creek Indians. The 645-square mile county is named after a general in the 1775 to 1783 Revolutionary War, Mad Antony Wayne. According to the 2020 U.S. census, Wayne’s County has a population of 30,144. The county seat, Jesup, was incoporate4d in 1870, whereby the previous seat of government was located in the towns of Tuckers Ville and Waynesville.

Wayne County heavily relies on forest products as an economic foundation. Early settlers of this county tied logs into rafts which they used to float down the Altamaha River to the Georgia coast for processing. The Wayne County Historical Society’s Heritage Center is located in a restored railroad section house. Most of these logs that are not sent away end up in local pulpwood processing mills. In recent decades, the residents of Wayne Cunty have built several new homes, with several subdivisions designed to appeal to retirees.
