Washington County is located in the Northwestern region of Georgia and was created on February 25, 1784. Upon its establishment, it became the tenth Georgia County. It was named for former US President George Washington after the Revolutionary War general. The county was acquired by merging grant lands from the Creek and Cherokee natives.

The US Census Bureau states that the county is 684 square miles in size. 678 square miles of that area is land, and 5.9 square miles is water. It is home to 19,988 residents as of the 2020 US Census.

Washington County has consistently supported Democratic Party candidates predominantly, like most other Southern counties with a majority-minority population. The county utilizes Sandersville as the county seat.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is located at 733 Kaolin Road, Sandersville, Georgia, 31082. The office is Washington County’s primary law enforcement agency. It puts a lot of effort on behalf of the county’s residents, and it is dedicated to providing them with the highest level of professionalism and respect,

The office has 41 staff under the supervision of Sheriff Joel Cochran, who are dedicated to working and ensuring that the WCSO attains its primary goal. These individuals are responsible for providing the residents of Washington County with the best possible service.

WCSO is responsible for keeping Washington County residents, inmates, and their property and county property safe. To ensure that it attains this responsibility, it has various divisions that help the office out with these tasks. They include the following;

Patrol Division

This division is responsible for all Washington County traffic and criminal law enforcement. It specializes in the following responsibilities:

  • Canine unit; specializes in trained dogs.
  • Hostage Negotiation Unit; deals with hostage situations.
  • Special Response Team; deals with situations that require special weapons and tactics.
  • Narcotics Task Force; specializes in cases involving drugs.
  • Criminal Investigation Unit; involves intensive investigation of severe cases.

Judicial Services Division

The Judicial Division’s primary duties include serving all legal documents issued by the District and Circuit Courts, transporting prisoners to and from the court, and providing protection for the Circuit Court Judges, trials, and courtrooms.

Detentions Divisions

The primary duty of the Detention Division is to take care of and house inmates at the Washington County Detention Center. It oversees the inmate population in all everyday life, including restricting mobility, monitoring inmate movements, granting visitors access, conducting searches, and helping convicts with difficulties.

Services Division

This division deals with stamping or legalizing documents on behalf of the county government. This includes;

  • Signing and stamping of a government seal.
  • Conducting criminal background checks and fingerprinting.
  • Issuance of permits and licenses.

Community Cooperation

WCSO believes in community cooperation, and it is the first of all the other agencies in the county to engage directly with the residents. The office aims to educate the county’s residents on law and order to ensure they do not get into trouble with authorities.

The office also targets the youth through various programs to minimize and eradicate gang crime, drug and substance abuse, and not attending school. They know that as tomorrow’s leaders, a better foundation of being law-abiding citizens is crucial.

The office also educates residents on reporting a crime in person or anonymously. It creates an open channel between the residents and the local law enforcement agencies.

Washington County Inmate Search

WCSO maintains the Washington County Jail, a minimum-medium correctional facility located at 733 Kaolin Road, Sandersville, GA 31082. The facility is the county’s primary long-term detention facility that can hold a capacity of more than 200 prisoners.

The county works so that when local law enforcement agencies arrest any individual, they are booked at the respective stations. The arresting agency can then present the arrestees before a judge for a bail hearing just minutes after arrest. Those inmates granted bail are released, and those that cannot pay or are denied bail by the court must be transferred to this county jail. This makes the Washington County Jail the primary hub of all inmates.

Nonetheless, a few inmates serve time in jail—individuals with sentences of less than a year.

As a result, to conduct a Washington County inmate search, the Washington jail inmate search tool is the first place you can visit. Besides, it has information on all incarcerated individuals and those recently released or transferred.

The search database is searchable by inmate’s name or prisoner’s date of incarceration. Under your inmate’s name, you can view the prisoner’s official records such as arrest, personal, criminal, and court records.

The database is also accessible via third-party websites. They also, at times, charge a fee for the services rendered.

What happens if the inmate’s name is not on the Search Database?

To locate an offender, not on the search database may be that the offender has not yet arrived at the facility or was transferred or released long ago. In such a case, you can still call the jail at 478-552-3186 or fax: 478-553-9969 to request the detentions division to perform the inmate search. However, you must provide as much information as possible to help the division quickly locate the inmate.

You can also visit the jail in person and request to locate an offender.

Suppose you are still unable to locate them using the above methods. In that case, you can visit the Washington County sex offender registry if the inmate is a sex offender or the Georgia statewide inmate search platform. All databases are accessible by prisoner’s name.
