About the County

Warren County is in the eastern part of Georgia. The county was non-existent until 1793, when the Georgia Legislature formulated an Act directing the formation of a new county from Washington, Columbia, Burke, and Wilkes Counties. Authorities named it for Joseph Warren, a soldier in the Revolutionary War. A few years later, Warrant County lost some land to Taliaferro, Glascock, Jefferson, and McDuffie Counties.

The Creek Indians were the initial area inhabitants and engaged in trade activities. Their movement within the county created the Upper Trading Path on Warren County’s far west. By the mid-1800s, White settlers began arriving in the area, pushing the Creek Indians away.

Warrenton is the county seat and was incorporated in 1810. It houses the county’s courthouse, built in 1910 and underwent renovation in 2000.

Railroad service has existed in the county since the early 1800s with the introduction of the Georgia Railroad Charter in 1833. A mule-car linked Warrenton and Camak towns, but authorities replaced it with true rail in 1873.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office has existed since 1793 after the county’s formation. During this time, the county has had 32 sheriffs, with the current one being Joe T. Peebles. His goal is to create a safe environment to stay in and invest in. While on these community protection duties, the Sheriff ensures he upholds local, state, and national laws.

Several divisions comprise the Sheriff’s Department and specialize in specific duties for efficiency. They include:

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is the most visible in the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. It comprises uniform patrol officers aiming to protect the community by patrolling the streets. They are also responsible for receiving and responding to emergency and distress calls from the county residents. Other responsibilities of the division include traffic control and investigation of road accidents.

Emergency Response Team

The Patrol Division has an Emergency Response Team comprising specially trained officers with unique equipment for intervention in emergencies. These individuals may also help find and capture wanted persons and rescue psychologically ill persons threatening self-harm. Other times, the Emergency Response Team engages in rescue missions of abducted people and officers.

Criminal Investigations Division

The purpose of the Criminal Investigations Division is to investigate Warren County’s criminal activities. It comprises investigators who work with the help of deputies for lead generation. The officers employ the following evidence accumulation techniques:

  • Reviewing and Analyzing Incident Reports
  • Arresting and Interrogating Suspects
  • Interviewing Victims
  • Visiting the Crime Scenes

Primarily, the investigators focus on cases affecting children, adults, and property, including:

  • Murder
  • Child Pornography
  • Statutory Rape

Additionally, burglaries and financial fraud cases fall under this division’s purview. You can follow up on a case’s progress by calling the office at 706-465-3340.

The Sheriff’s Department also has some programs that directly help the community. They include:

C.H.A.M.P.S

This program focuses on the county youths to help them resist the peer pressure of engaging in drug use and criminal activities. The program duration is 20 weeks, and the officers pass on the knowledge to school students, mostly on career days.

Additionally, deputies teach the students about the downsides of bullying and violent behaviors and provide channels via which the students can reach out for help.

Traffic Citation

Warrenton County Sheriff’s Office maintains an online website where county residents can pay their traffic fines. The website is secure, and it only requires you to select the town where the fine was issued. Afterward, it navigates you to a webpage where you can input your ticket/driver’s license number.

County Inmate Search

Warren County Sheriff’s Office runs the Warren County Jail, the county’s primary correctional facility. It houses offenders awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections and those awaiting trial and sentencing.

The Freedom of Information Act requires various departments and agencies to make accessible offender information. In compliance, the Sheriff’s Office maintains a jail roster, which you can access by visiting the office. Alternatively, you can inquire by calling 706-465-3340 or emailing this department. To facilitate easy information retrieval, ensure you know the inmate’s full name.

The following information is available on the roster:

  • Name
  • Arrest Date
  • Reasons for Arrest
  • Booking Number
  • Bond Amount
  • Arresting Agency

Inmate Search via the DOC Website

Georgia Department of Corrections is responsible for overseeing incarceration at the state level. Facility transfer is the main reason inmates from county jails end up in state-run facilities. Two main scenarios cause these transfers:

  • Determination of a Pending Case by a Judge.
  • Change in the Security Status of Offenders Serving Time in the County Jail. The Sheriff must be able to illustrate to the court that the inmate’s stay in the facility affects its general stability.

The DOC maintains an online inmate search website with two broad search options: Name/Description and I.D./Case Number. The Name Search option has several subdivisions. However, the best approach is to input the particular inmate’s first and last name in conjunction. Alternatively, you can utilize the “Most Recent Institution,” allowing you to select Warren County Jail, consequently giving you a list of offenders transferred from the jail.

The ID/Case Number option is the most accurate, as each number identifies a specific offender. An inmate may have more than one case number, depending on whether they’ve previously faced criminal charges.
