About the County

Ware County is in southeast Georgia, bordering the Satilla River. Initially, the area was part of Appling County, but the Georgia Legislature intervened in December 1824, dividing the county to accommodate a new county. The authorities named it for Nicholas Ware, a flamboyant politician who never got a chance to visit the area. Notably, Okefenokee Swamps cover major parts of Ware County’s lower sections.

The county seat is Waycross, located 100 miles from Jacksonville, Florida’s most populous city. Waycross town is where roads and trails meet, hence its name. The strategic location made the county a significant transportation hub, with the early roads heading to important sites like Burnt Fort on the Satilla.

Over the years, the county has had major developments, primarily in education. Some of the major contributors are Waycross College and Okefenokee Technical College, institutions that blend regular curricula with community-based programs. The economy has also flourished, with the Downtown Waycross Development Authority attracting investors in the area.

As of 2020, the county had 36,251 people per the 2020 census results, a 0.2% decrease from 2010.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

Ware County Sheriff’s Office is at 3487 Harris Road, Waycross, GA 31503. The current Sheriff is Carl James, who strives to improve the lives of the county residents. For efficiency in service delivery, the Sheriff works with several divisions, each specialized in a specific role. The officers in these divisions also undergo regular training to ensure they function at their best.

Crime is one of the major issues facing the county residents. The Sheriff aims to eliminate it through various programs, including:

Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch Program aims to incorporate the community into crime prevention. As the name suggests, it entails looking out for your neighbor’s well-being, including their property. In case of any suspicious activity, you call law enforcement authorities. The effectiveness of the program depends on whether the neighbors are active.

Participating in the Program

The initial step toward participating in the program is investigating the problem that mainly affects your neighborhood. You can do so using fliers or visiting your neighbors. Then, contact the Sheriff’s Office at (912) 287-4326 and inquire about the area’s Neighborhood Watch Program. After two meetings with law enforcement, the neighbors can select a captain to oversee the program.

Identity Theft Prevention

Identity theft is a major crime where the victims lose millions of money and spend most of their life doing right the thieves’ crimes. Additionally, victims may lose their jobs and property due to this crime.

Contact the Sheriff’s Office or any fraud department within your locality if you’re a victim. The authorities will immediately request your banking agency to withhold any transactions involving your details. The Sheriff’s Office will also give you a report which you must provide a copy to agencies requesting proof of the crime, including your creditors.

Afterward, report to the Federal Trade Commission, an agency that helps law enforcement authorities with investigations by maintaining a database of such cases.

CodeRED Program

This is a phone notification program that the Sheriff’s Office uses to notify the county residents of potential emergencies. Additionally, the office uses the system to inform the residents on other matters of public safety interest.

Interested individuals can participate by registering through this link. The website requires them to create a management account or enroll as guests. Afterward, your details will be in the system, and you’ll receive notifications via email or text messages. The alerts are pre-recorded and will also include protection measures.

County Inmate Search

The Freedom of Information Act requires agencies and correctional departments to make inmate information accessible to the public. Ware County complies with this requirement by providing an online inmate search website. It contains a jail roster of the Ware County Jai offenders serving medium-term sentences and those awaiting trial or sentencing.

The website has three search categories: Current Inmates, Booking over the Last 24 Hours, and Inmate Booking by Date. Each option allows you to conduct a name search, where you can provide the inmate’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. On the “Inmate Booking by Date” category, you get the option to filter the results by selecting a date range of arrest.

If you don’t recall the inmate’s exact name, you can scroll through the jail roster, as the names are in alphabetic order.

A successful search will give the following inmate details:

  • Name
  • Arrest Date
  • Bond
  • Days in Incarceration
  • Reasons for Arrest

Alternatively, you can visit the Sheriff’s Office and review the jail roster or call (912) 287-4326 for inquiries. Ensure you know the offender’s full name for easy information retrieval.

Inmate Search via the DOC Website

Facility transfers are common in the United States, particularly from county jails to state prisons. This happens for several reasons, mainly after a judgment on pending cases. The Sheriff may also petition the court for the transfer of inmates whose security needs are unmanageable at the county level.

The Georgia Department of Corrections maintains an online database containing information on offenders in state-run facilities. The website has two broad search options: Name and ID/Case Number. Under the name search section, there is an option to indicate the most recent facility where the inmate might have been incarcerated.
