About the County

Walton County is in north-central Georgia, 45 miles east of Atlanta. The area was part of Cherokee and Creek Indians before the legislature intervened in 1818 by formulating an Act directing the formation of a new county. Authorities named it for George Walton, a former Governor and signer of the Independence Declaration.

Monroe is the county seat, and the new administration named it in honor of James Monroe, the 5th United States President. The area attracted the first non-Indian settlers in the 1830s, and they settled on the county’s eastern side. Primarily, these people were farmers, focusing majorly on cotton, grains, and potatoes. Consequently, the area’s first cotton mills were constructed in the 1840s.

Later in the 1890s, textile mills increased in number, resulting in the county’s economic prosperity. However, soil erosion and the Great Depression in the 1930s negatively affected agriculture, causing a recession. This remained the case until after World War II, when the county’s economy began stabilizing after embracing a diversified manufacturing base.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

Walton County Sheriff’s Office is at 1425 S Madison Ave, Monroe, GA 30655, United States. The current Sheriff is Joe Chapman, who aims to make the county safe for residents and visitors. He achieves this goal with the help of several specialized divisions for efficiency and effectiveness. Such divisions include:

Uniform Patrol

This Division is the most visible in the Sheriff’s Office. The officers have various responsibilities, but the main one is to ensure the community is safe through patrols. The United States Census Bureau indicates that Walton County covers 326 square miles. The Sheriff’s Office divides the land into seven primary patrol zones for easy patrol, with patrol deputies working in shifts of four.

Additionally, the division is responsible for responding to emergency and distress calls from the county residents. On average, there are over 320 calls that go through the office.

Civil Division

The Civil Division is a section of the Sheriff’s Office that provides various services to the courthouse, including security and civil processes. The Court Security Unit ensures that no weapons access the courthouse by installing metal detectors at the entrance. Additionally, the officers in the unit work together with the K-9 section, which provides canines that help detect explosives.

The Civil Unit of the Division prepares and issues various documents on behalf of the court, including warrants and Writs of Possession. Additional duties include:

  • Performing Extraditions
  • Inmate Transportation to the Superior Court for Proceedings
  • Transportation of Inmates with Mental Illnesses to Hospital for Checkup
  • Handling and Serving Paperwork like Subpoenas

Youth Investigations Division

This Division focuses on juvenile criminal activities. The officers follow up and investigate these cases through interviews, arresting runaways, and visiting the crime scenes to gather evidence. Within the Youth Investigations Division is the School Resource Officer Program which is responsible for:

  • Instilling Positive Values in Students
  • Educating Children about the state laws
  • Ensuring Schools are Safe for Students

Criminal Investigations Division

This is the Sheriff’s Office section responsible for investigating criminal activities in the county, particularly felonies. The officers undergo special training and refresher courses to ensure they perform effectively. The felony cases they focus on are those affecting people and property, including:

  • Murder
  • Rape
  • Financial Crimes
  • Burglaries

Contact the Division’s Commander at 770-266-1561 to follow up on a pending case.

Drivers Education Program

Walton County Sheriff’s Office offers the Drivers Education Program, accessible online or at a school. You can learn more about it via this link, and you’ll get a list of options based on your location within the county.

County Inmate Search

Walton County has a Jail Division under the Sheriff’s Office management. It houses male and female offenders serving medium-term sentences for crimes committed within the county. You may also find individuals awaiting trial or sentencing in the correctional facility.

The inmate search process in Walton County is possible through the Sheriff’s Office. It provides an online jail roster containing the names of offenders in the Walton County Jail. The roster is alphabetic and lacks an inmate search category. As a result, you’ll have to scroll through the list until you locate the person of interest.

You’ll get the following inmate information after successfully locating your loved one:

  • Name
  • Incarceration Date
  • Arrest Type
  • Arresting Agency
  • Offense Committed

The jail roster is also available at the Sheriff’s Office, and you can utilize it by visiting the Office or calling 770-267-0887. Whichever the case, ensure you know the offender’s full name for a successful search.

Inmate Search via the DOC Website

Inmates arrested in Walton County spend time in the Walton County Jail as they await trial or sentencing. After a verdict, the judge may indicate that such inmates serve jail terms in higher security institutions. In such a case, authorities organize transfers from Walton County Jail to state-run facilities. The transfer may also be possible if an offender’s security level changes. However, the Sheriff must be able to demonstrate to the court that it’s impossible to meet the offender’s security needs at the county level.

In case of any of the above scenarios, you can conduct an inmate search via the DOC’s website. It contains the following search options:

  • Name/Description
  • ID/Case Number

Upon inputting the offender’s first and last name, you can select Walton County Jail as the most recent facility. This option is available at the end of the Name/Description Search category. This way, the search results will be narrower. ID/Case Number option is the most accurate as each number is unique to each offender.
