About the County  

Walker County is in northwest Georgia, bordering Tennessee. It was formed in 1833 from Murray County after Georgia Legislature formulated an Act directing the formation of a new county. The authorities named it for Major Freeman Walker, a former U.S. Senator.  

However, Walker County didn’t retain its original boundaries, losing parts of its land to Dade, Chattooga, and Catoosa Counties in 1837, 1838, and 1853, respectively. Further, the legislature transferred parts of Walker County’s land to Whitfield County in 1859.  

The Creeks and Cherokee Indians were among the first settlers in the area. However, the discovery of gold created unease among the residents and thousands of fortune hunters and state agencies. Eventually, the Cherokees lost the land to the authorities.  

The county seat, LaFayette, was incorporated in 1835 and named for Marquis de Lafayette. The town is home to the county’s courthouse, which was built in 1919. Additionally, its strategic location allowed for the construction of Shaw Industries, a major carpet manufacturer.  

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 67,654 people.  

About the County Sheriff’s Office 

Walker County Sheriff’s Office is at 105 South Duke Street, Lafayette, Georgia, 30728. The current Sheriff is Steve Wilson, who works to better the lives of the county residents through crime elimination. To achieve this goal, he works with the help of several divisions and units, including:  

Criminal Investigation Division  

The Criminal Investigation Division is under the leadership of a Captain who oversees the operation of nine investigators. The Division’s primary purpose is to investigate the county’s major crimes, particularly felonies. Usually, the detectives investigate and follow up on cases on incident reports, although they may initiate new ones independently.  

The Division has two subdivisions:  

General Investigations 

This section has seven investigators responsible for handling pending criminal cases in the Sheriff’s Office. Such cases include: 

• Financial Crimes  

• Burglaries 
• Assaults  

Child and Sex Crimes Investigations  

This section focuses on crimes against children, sexual assaults, and rapes. The officers in this subdivision have special training to help victims and comfort their families. For efficiency in service delivery, the investigators co-work with District Attorney’s Office, the Children and Family Services Department, and the Sexual Assault Center. 

The Criminal Investigations Division is accessible to the public from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. You can also call the toll-free number at 706-638-1909 EXT. 1288, which is operational for 24 hours throughout the week.  

Uniform Patrol Division  

The Uniform Patrol Division is responsible for responding to 911 and distress calls, including burglaries, assaults, and domestic violence. The top leadership of the division includes Sergeants (4) and Corporals (4), who oversee four shifts consisting of seven deputies per shift.  

The deputies are also responsible for traffic control and investigating motor vehicle accidents in the county. Other responsibilities include: 

• Serving and Executing Court-Issued Warrants  
• Initiating offenses being Investigated by Detectives  

The division has a unit known as the Traffic and Accident Prevention Unit, with the following duties:  

• Arrest and Prosecution of D.U.I. Drivers  
• Interdiction of Drugs  
• Handling Canines in the K-9 Unit 

Special Operations Group 

This elite team consists of volunteers who undergo high-level training and selection. It is responsible for responding to emergencies in the county, like fire outbreaks or floods. Additionally, the officers in the group visit schools for career days and educate the children, parents, and teachers on safety.  

The expertise of the Special Operations Group has attracted the neighboring communities for training through the S.W.A.T School. It offers a two-week free basic education to agencies from the entire southeastern United States.   

County Inmate Search 

Through the Sheriff’s Office, Walker County runs a Detention Division responsible for housing DOC inmates and individuals awaiting trial. The daily average population of the Walker County jail is 200 inmates. 

Information on the Walker County Jail offenders is accessible through the Georgia Department of Correction’s website. However, the department advises the public against relying on the website’s information for business or legal transactions. Instead, they should use it for informative purposes only.  

To begin the search process, visit the DOC’s website and select one of the two search options: Name and I.D./Case Number. The Name/Description option allows you to search based on the inmate’s first and last name. If you want narrow results, use both name searches together. The website also accepts partial name searches where you input the first few letters of the inmate’s name –for instance, “Jeff” instead of Jefferson. However, finding the specific offender using this option might be tiring.  

Within the name search category, there’s the option to indicate the institution of incarceration. It’s preferable to leave it blank because of facility transfers common in DOC facilities.  

The ID/Case Number search is the most accurate as each number identifies a particular individual. However, prisoners can have more than one case number, especially if they’ve previously faced criminal charges.  

Sex Offender Search  

Walker County Sheriff’s Office maintains a sex offender registry per Georgia Sex Offender Statutes requirements. Currently, the website has 199 registrants with information about each. Unfortunately, the roster lacks a search option to narrow the names to a specific individual. Hence, you must scroll through the names to find the person of interest.
