About the County

Upson County is in west-central Georgia. It was part of Pike and Crawford Counties until December 1824, when Georgia Legislature intervened. Authorities named the new county for Stephen Upson, a renowned Georgia lawyer. The new administration opted for the lottery land allocation system, which attracted many settlers to the area.

The county seat, Thomaston, was formed in March 1825 and incorporated in June of the same year. Most settlers in the area were from the wealthy class who owned large plantations. Primarily, they opted for the eastern sections because of the rich fertile soils and the availability of irrigation water from the Flint River. The area became famous for large-scale cotton plantations, resulting in the first county’s cotton mill construction in 1833.

Apart from agriculture, the county relies on tourism for economic growth. For instance, many people visit the area to see the section where the Flint River cuts through Oak Mountain, forming climbing river bluffs. The county’s population has also advanced over the years, with the 2020 census results indicating that the area has 27,700 people.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

Upson County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s primary law enforcement authority. The current Sheriff is Dan Kilgore, who has been in office since January 2013. During his tenure, he has managed to deal with criminal activities in the area, bettering the lives of the residents. The office is also responsible for taking care of animals, primarily pets.

The following divisions help the office achieve its goal of community protection:

Animal Control Division

This section of the Sheriff’s Office takes care of animals in the county, including strays and unwanted pets. Additionally, the officers ensure that the county residents, particularly pet owners, adhere to the general animal protection guidelines, including appropriate feeding plans. Rabies control also falls under this division’s purview.

Public members interested in adopting pets in Animal Control’s custody can do so via this link. On the other hand, individuals with animal-related complaints can do so here

Property Section

This section stores and returns stolen goods and items recovered by the Sheriff’s Office. You may call the office at 706-647-7411 and inquire about the item you want to pick up. Consequently, the office will process the request, preventing delays on the pickup date.

Notably, proof of ownership is required, such as receipts of purchase. Additionally, you must present a valid photo identification document, like a passport or a state-issued ID.

It’s also possible for third parties to pick up items on behalf of the owner. However, they must provide a written and signed affidavit authorizing such access. The office may call the owner to confirm the validity of such an affidavit.

Courthouse Security Division

The Courthouse Security Division maintains the courthouse’s security before, during, and after proceedings. The officers in the division install metal detectors and other systems to ensure no weapon finds its way into the courts. The K-9 Unit also works with the division to help detect explosives within the courthouse.

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division investigates criminal activities in the county. It comprises specially trained officers with special equipment to help them analyze every piece of evidence. Primarily, the focus is on felony offenses that affect children, adults, and property, including:

  • Murder
  • Rape
  • Child Abuse and Pornography
  • Financial Fraud

The lead investigator employs the following techniques to gather leads:

  • Interview the Victim
  • Look for and Arrest the Suspect
  • Visit the Crime Scene and Gather More Evidence

Individuals can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 706-647-7411 and inquire about their pending cases.

County Inmate Search

Public access to open records, including inmate information, is a right per the Freedom of Information Act. In compliance with the Act, Upson County maintains an online jail roster containing information on inmates in the county jail.

The names on the website are in alphabetic order, meaning you can scroll through until you find your loved one. You can also opt for the less tiring choice of utilizing one of the three search options: Current Inmates, 24 Hours Arrest, and Inmates by Arrest Date.

The above broad options allow you to conduct name searches, where you input the offender’s first and last name. Using both names together is a better option as the results will be narrower. The “Inmates by Arrest Date” option allows you to filter the search results on the approximate arrest date.

The search results will indicate:

  • Offender’s Name
  • Address
  • Arrest Date
  • Charges Incarceration Status
  • Bond Amount
  • Time Spent in Jail

You can also visit the Sheriff’s Office or call for inquiries regarding a person’s incarceration status. Ensure you know the offender’s full name while doing so.

Sex Offender Search

Upson County maintains a sex offender registry of registrants in the county in compliance with Georgia’s Sex Offender Statutes. The laws require the Sheriff’s Office to run such a registry and keep tabs on registrants in the county.

The roster on the website is alphabetically arranged, and you must scroll through the list. Information on absconders is also available on the website and is distinguished from the rest by a yellow row color key. A red-colored row identifies wanted sex offenders, and residents can provide the Sheriff’s Office with helpful information.

You can also use Georgia’s Sex Offender Registry, accessible through this link. The advantage of this site over the county one is that you can search based on an offender’s name and address.
