About the County

Union County is in the northeast part of Georgia, bordering North Carolina. The area was part of Cherokee County until Georgia Legislature intervened in 1832 by drafting an Act directing the formation of a new county. However, Union County didn’t retain its original boundaries, as authorities annexed it in 1854 and 1856 to form Fannin and Gilmer Counties, respectively. The county seat is Blairsville, the only incorporated town in the county. The city houses the county’s only courthouse, constructed in 1978.

After the county’s creation, people deemed the area extremely remote. Additionally, the land was not so valuable, so only the middle-class people or those with financial constraints settled there. However, the construction of roads and bridges in the 1840s changed people’s view of the area, and they began settling and practicing agriculture. To date, Union County is still rural and is dependent on agricultural output for economic advancement.

The 2020 census results indicate that the county had 24,632 people, an 18.4% increase from 2010. The report further suggests that the county covers 329 square miles, 322 of it being the land area.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The mission of the Union County Sheriff’s Office is to offer protection and attend to the needs of the county residents. It works in partnership with the residents for crime elimination, consequently improving the general quality of life.

The following divisions assist the Sheriff’s Office in achieving its goals:

Admin/Records Division

The Administration and Records Division complies with the Georgia Open Records Act by allowing public access to incident and accident reports. It also processes traffic citations before forwarding them to the courts.

Individuals interested in incident and accident reports can visit this division at the Sheriff’s Office, which is open for business from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. For faster processing, call the office at (706) 439-6066 before the visit and provide the necessary information that identifies your incident. Such information may include the incident date and case number, if available.

On the collection day, ensure you carry a valid state-issued ID or another photo identification document like a passport. The charges for incident reports are 0.10 per page and $5 for accident reports.

Additionally, the office conducts background checks for criminal history records. You can access these services by filling out the criminal history release form and paying $25.

Uniform Patrol Division

Officers in the Uniform Patrol Divisions oversee five patrol zones across the county 24 hours a day throughout the week, ensuring the streets are safe. Additionally, they respond to emergency and distress calls, especially those relating to domestic violence. Other responsibilities include traffic control and investigation of road accidents.

Warrant/Civil Division

The Warrant and Civil Division assists the local courts, and those from other jurisdictions serve documents such as warrants and subpoenas. They also arrange and process extraditions with the Georgia DOC.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Conducting Evictions
  • Transportation of County Jail Inmates to Hospital for Mental Health Evaluation
  • Coordinating and Assisting the Courthouse Staff

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division conducts criminal investigations for felony offenses in the county. The division’s officers undergo special training with regular refreshers to remain effective. They conduct investigations by developing leads in the following ways:

  • Interviewing Victims
  • Arresting Questioning Suspects
  • Reviewing Incident Reports
  • Going back to the Crime Scene and Gathering More Evidence

Primarily, the types of offenses the division handles directly affect people, children, or property, including:

  • Murder
  • Manslaughter
  • Statutory Rape
  • Child Pornography
  • Financial Fraud

If you have a pending case, check its progress by reaching out to the office at 706-439-6066.

County Inmate Search

Union County Sheriff’s Office maintains an online website containing a jail roster of current inmates in the county jail. Changes on the list happen regularly, as inmates are booked in or released from jail. Hence, the data can be misleading, especially for those intending to rely on it for legal purposes. Additionally, Georgia Statutes prohibit the display of mugshots on the website.

Click this link to access the jail roster. The names are in an alphabetic order starting with the last name, meaning you can scroll through the list until to find your loved one. Alternatively, you can conduct an inmate search using either of the following options: Current Inmates, 24 Hours Arrest, and Inmates by Arrest Date.

Each above category has the first and last name search options to ease the search process. All you have to do is provide either of the two names or use them in conjunction for better results.

The “Inmates by Arrest Date” search option allows you to select a date range to filter the search results.

The search results show the following offender information:

  • Name
  • Incarceration Status
  • Bond Amount (If Any)
  • Warrant Numbers
  • Reasons for Arrest
  • Days in Jail

Notably, some of the inmates are awaiting trial or sentencing. Hence, the public and employers should treat them as innocent until proven guilty. The Union County Jail also houses offenders on behalf of other jurisdictions.

Sex Offender Search

Georgia Statutes require the Sheriff’s Office to maintain the county’s Sex Offender Registry. This includes regularly updating the roster with changes in the statuses of registrants. Doing so helps the public remain safe from violent sex offenders and predators who recidivate.

Follow this link to access the website containing identifying offender information, including physical description and addresses. Absconders who fail to comply with registration requirements have yellow markings, while those who are wanted have red markings.
