About the County

Twiggs County is in the central part of Georgia, within the Upper Coastal Plain. It was part of Wilkinson County, but the state legislature intervened in 1809 by formulating an Act directing the formation of a new county. The authorities named it for John Twiggs, a General in the 1775-1783 Revolutionary War.

Initial area inhabitants were members of the Mississippi Culture, although the Creek Indians came and pushed them away. These new inhabitants settled along trading paths and waterways, resulting in the growth of towns. Such a town was Jefferson, the county seat, and it’s the only incorporated city in Twiggs County.

By the nineteenth century, the settlers were farmers engaged in large-scale cotton farming for export. It remained the main economic activity even after the Civil War, in addition to logging and selling forestry products.

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 8,022 people, a 13.3% decrease from 2010. The report further shows that the county covers 363 square miles, 358 of it being the land area.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Twiggs County Sheriff’s office aims to serve the county residents fairly, compassionately, and respectfully. The goal is to protect the community through crime elimination, which it achieves with the help of various divisions and units. Some of the specific functions of the department include:

Access to Open Records

Public access to open records is a state requirement under Georgia statutes. The provision directs the state and counties to provide access to records such as incident and accident reports. In compliance, Twiggs County requires interested parties to make the requests in writing to the Records Custodian. You can also do so via this email address

Notably, parties directly involved in incidents or individuals whose names are in the reports do not have to pay for the initial copy. However, the office charges $0.25 per page for additional copies or future requests of the same reports. For vehicle crash reports, the cost is $5 per report for interested parties, but victims and involved parties access them for free.

If the above reports have issues, contact the deputy who generated them. However, the deputies can only correct mistakes but not change the factuality of the report’s content.

Criminal History Request

Most businesses require job applicants to submit copies of their criminal histories. To begin the criminal history check process, download and fill out the Criminal History Background Consent Form. Afterward, visit the 911 section at the Sheriff’s Office and submit the filled-out form.

It will cost you $20 for the officers to complete your request, and you can pay it in cash or money order. You must also present a valid photo identification document during the process (state-issued ID, driver’s license, or a passport).

CodeRED Community Notification

CodeRED is a phone notification system that the Sheriff’s Office uses to notify county residents of upcoming emergencies like hurricanes and wildfires. Additionally, the office informs the public of any other matters of public safety concern via the system.

You can register for these notifications here by creating a managed account or enrolling as a guest. Whichever the case, you’ll receive pre-recorded notifications, including voicemail messages to your phone or email. The alerts will also include the measures you can take to protect yourself.

County Inmate Search

Learning about the whereabouts of an incarcerated loved one can be daunting. This was even worse in the past when there were no statutes regulating access to public information. However, the Freedom of Information Act has since intervened, requiring correctional facilities and other agencies to provide easy information access means.

In compliance, Twiggs County provides an online website containing Twiggs County’s jail roster. The website has three search options: Current Inmates, 24 Hours Arrest, and Inmates by Arrest Date. Each category allows you to filter searches by the offender’s first and last name. However, the “Inmates by Arrest Date” option has a section where you indicate the estimated timeline for when an arrest happened.

Successful search results should indicate the following information:

  • Offender’s Name
  • Arrest Date
  • Incarceration Status (Currently Booked or Released)
  • Bond Amount
  • Days in Jail
  • Offenses Committed
  • Warrants

You can also find the jail roster at the Sheriff’s Office. Ensure you know the offender’s full name when visiting the office for easy information retrieval.

Sex Offender Search

Twiggs County maintains a sex offender registry via the Sheriff’s Office. It contains the names and information of registrants in the county. Keeping this information is essential to help the county residents protect themselves from violent sex offenders and predators likely to recidivate upon release. The website also allows officers to keep tabs on the registrants while verifying whether they comply with registration requirements.

The “In Your Area” option allows you to learn about offenders in a particular area. To do so, fill out the address, city, and zip subcategories. The search results will show the names of registrants within the specific area.

There is also the Name Search option which requires you to input the offender’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. A successful search will provide the following offender information:

  • Name and Aliases
  • Physical Description (Including a Mugshot)
  • Addresses Offenses

A statewide sex offender registry is also available here
