About the County
Turner County is in south-central Georgia. The area was part of Irwin, Wilcox, Worth, and Dooly Counties, before the state legislature intervened in 1905. The authorities named the new county after Henry Gray Turner, a US Congressman and a Supreme Court Judge.
The county seat, Ashburn, was incorporated in 1890 and was selected because of its strategic location near the upcoming railroad. Authorities named it for W. W. Ashburn, a bank president and land owner who was crucial for the real estate boom in the area. Seventeen years later, the county’s first and only courthouse was built in the area.
The county’s economy has always depended on agriculture. Primarily, it produces crops like cotton, pecans, and peanuts on a large scale. The world’s largest peanut processing plant in Ashburn reflects this large-scale production.
In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 9,006 people, a 4.7% increase from 2010.
About the County Sheriff’s Office
The Turner County Sheriff’s Office primarily aims to protect the county’s residents and their property. The ultimate goal is to improve the general quality of life by providing law enforcement services. Several divisions assist the current Sheriff in achieving the goal of community protection. They include:
Patrol Division
This division is a significant part of the Sheriff’s Office. It comprises patrol officers who work shifts to give the community 24-hour protection through patrols and response to emergency calls. Additionally, the officers are responsible for helping distressed community members through counseling programs. Other responsibilities of the division include:
- Improving Community Ties with Law Enforcement Authorities
- Traffic Control
- Investigating Minor Offenses and Some Domestic Violence Cases
The K-9 Unit
This unit comprises canines and specially trained handlers. It’s a crucial part of the Sheriff’s Office as it helps officers track and locate narcotics affecting youths in the county. Additionally, the canines flush offenders out of their hideouts while protecting their handlers from harm or injury. Authorities also use them to guard major events in the county by searching for and detecting explosives.
Court Services Division
One of the duties of a Sheriff is to ensure the court activities run smoothly without interruptions. The Court Services Division is a diverse unit with several responsibilities to the court. For instance, it provides security by introducing metal detectors and other security systems at the court’s entrance. They also protect the perimeters and partner with the K-9 Unit for additional protection.
Besides securing the courthouse, the division organizes inmate transportation from the county jail to the court and back. The officers also ensure that the inmates remain orderly during the court proceedings.
Records Division
Turner County sheriff’s Office maintains a Records Division via which public members can access various records, including incidents and accident reports. Interested individuals can visit the office at 1301 Industrial Drive and inquire. Notably, you’ll pay a processing fee depending on the number of pages of the record.
Alternatively, visit the Buy Crash website to access accident reports. You’ll have to give the necessary details for a successful search, including the assigned case number.
Fingerprinting Section
Fingerprinting services are necessary for an individual’s background check for criminal history. Most employers require employees to present fingerprint cards before getting employment. The Sheriff’s Office offers this service through the jail section, which is open for business from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm.
The officers will require you to present a valid photo ID during the process.
County Inmate Search
Turner County complies with the Freedom of Information Act by maintaining an online jail roster via the Sheriff’s Department. The roster has three search options: Current Inmates, Bookings over the Last 24 Hours, and Inmates by Booking Date. The three options provide name search subcategories, where you can use the offender’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. Preferably, use both names for narrower results.
The “Inmates by Booking Date” option allows you to select a date range, although you can leave it blank. Although it might be tiring, you can also scroll through the jail roster without providing a name.
The search results show the following offender information:
- Name
- Incarceration Status
- Arrest Date and Time
- Arresting Officer
- Bond Amount
- Days in Jail
- Charges
- Criminal History
Notably, the website doesn’t display mugshots.
Alternatively, you can visit the Sheriff’s Office and review the jail roster or inquire by calling (229) 567-2401. Whichever the case, ensure you know the offender’s full name.
Sex Offender Search
The United States requires counties to keep sex offender information in a central database easily accessible to the general public. In compliance, Georgia maintains a sex offender registry through the state Bureau of Investigation. This database allows law enforcement authorities to keep tabs on registrants. Public members can also protect themselves from violent offenders and predators through the website.
The online website has the following search options:
- First/Last Name
- County
- City and Street
- Zip Code
The name search option is preferable if you’re looking for a specific offender. However, if you intend to know the sex offenders in a particular area, utilize the other three options. The website allows you to indicate the search radius of choice within which the search engine will focus the results. This way, you’ll get information on registrants within the particular area.
