About the County
Troup County is in the south-central section of Georgia, bordering Alabama. It was one of the counties formed in 1825 by a Georgia Legislature’s Act which required the Creek Indian lands to be divided into counties. Authorities named it Troup County for Governor George Troup, who signed the aforementioned Act.
The new county leadership chose LaGrange as the county seat, named in honor of Chateau de LaGrange. They opted for this city because of its strategic location near the county’s geographic center. By the 19th century, agriculture was the main economic activity due to the rich and fertile soils and availability of irrigation water from the Chattahoochee River. As a result, the county became a hub for commerce, education, and government. Consequently, LaGrange hosted the first two female colleges and a male university, which continue to serve the county residents.
As of 2020, the county had a population of 69,426, a 4.26% increase from 2010. The United States Census Bureau further indicates that the county covers 446 square miles, 441 of the area being land.
About the County Sheriff’s Office
Troup County Sheriff’s Office is the principal law enforcement authority in the county. Primarily, the office operates within the confines of local, state, and national laws to maintain social order. It focuses on protecting life and property and provides means by which public members can air grievances.
Some of the programs the department uses to achieve its community protection goal include:
Neighborhood Watch
The program’s goal is to make the county residents check on the well-being of their neighbors, primarily utilizing the “Are You Okay” computer program. Mainly, this focus is aimed at helping the seniors and the disabled who lack always-accessible caregivers.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Office also use the program to educate the residents on what it takes to live harmoniously with each other. They do so through various seminars, and the move has been effective in crime prevention in the county.
Crime Stoppers
Troup County Sheriff’s Office runs the Crime Stoppers program, which brings society together to fight crimes. Community members and the media receive training on ways of detecting suspicious criminal activities and how to respond to them.
The office provides a toll-free number where residents can call 812-1000 to report ongoing, potential, or already-happened crimes. The recipient will receive and record your message before taking the necessary action. Notably, the program assures you of anonymity. There are also cash prize awards for individuals who give information that leads to an arrest or crime prevention.
The Sheriff’s Office also operates with the help of divisions for efficiency and effectiveness. They include:
Public Information Division
One of the ways to reach information to many people is through the Internet. As such, the Public Information Division manages the department’s social media pages and updates them accordingly. Moreover, it is responsible for publishing annual reports and tracking statistics relating to the Sheriff’s Office. This includes reviewing the progress of various programs, including Neighborhood Watch and Junior Deputy.
Furthermore, the Sheriff believes that the media is integral to law enforcement when identifying and apprehending suspects. As such, the deputies in the Public Information Division maintain contact with the media through press releases and interviews.
Jail Division
This division is responsible for housing male and female offenders awaiting trial in State or Superior Court. It is under the management of the Sheriff, who delegates the duties to the Jail Administrator, who oversees the daily operations.
Besides acting as a temporary holding facility, the jail also houses individuals serving medium-term sentences.
County Inmate Search
The Freedom of Information Act directs institutions to make offender information easily accessible to the public. In compliance, Troup County maintains an online jail roster containing information on incarcerated individuals. You may opt to scroll through the names or utilize the name search option.
Notably, the search engine accepts both partial and full name searches. However, the full name search is better as the results as narrow, increasing the chances of finding your loved one. For more accurate results, specify the offender’s race and gender.
A successful search provides the following offender information:
- Name
- Offenses Committed and Offense Level
- Physical Description
- Bond Amount (If Any)
- Arrest Date
- Arresting Agency
If you can’t access the website, visit the Sheriff’s Office and review the jail roster. You can also call the facility at 706-883-1729 for further inquiries.
Inmate Search via the DOC’s Website
Sometimes, inmates may be transferred from the county jail to state-run facilities. There are two reasons why these transfers happen:
- A Judgment by the Court. This affects offenders who were previously awaiting sentencing in the Troup County Jail.
- A change in an Inmate’s Security Status. In this case, the Sheriff must convince the court that it’s impossible to meet the inmate’s security needs at the county level.
You can locate an offender at the state level through the Georgia Department of Correction’s inmate search website. The following are the available search options:
- Name
- ID/Case Number
Use the Name Search option by providing the inmate’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. Whichever the case, it’s unlikely that the results will give a single result, particularly if the offender’s name is common.
The ID/Case Number Search is the most accurate as each identifies a specific individual. Inmates may have more than one case number, especially if they’ve previously faced criminal charges.
