Towns County is located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The county was founded on March 6, 1856, and named after United States lawyer, legislator, and politician George W. Towns. Young Harris is the largest city, while Hiawassee is the county seat. The adjacent counties include Clay County, Rabun County, Habersham County, White County, and Union County. Zell Miller is one of the notable natives in Towns County, a former Georgia governor and U.S senator. 

According to the 2020 United States census, Towns County has a total population of 12493 people, 4898 households, and 3240 families living in the county. On the other hand, the racial composition of the county includes 91.8% White, 0.99% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.99% other mixed races, and 3.32% Latino or Hispanic. 

According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the county’s total area is 172 square miles (450km), where land occupies 167 square miles (430km) and 5.4 square miles (14km) (3.2%) is water. Towns County is mainly in the Hiwassee basin, with a section of the county in the Tugaloo River sub-basin in the larger Savannah River basin and a small section of the county’s southwestern corner in the Chattahoochee River sub-basin of the A.C.F. River Basin. In addition, the county is located amidst the Blue Ridge Mountains, some of which are secured by Chattahoochee National Forest.

Towns County Sheriff’s Office 

The Towns County sheriff’s office is a law enforcement agency that supports public safety in Towns County through public policing and managing county jails and inmates. Criminal Investigation Division 

The criminal investigation division is in charge of the investigation of all homicides, kidnappings, assaults, domestic violence incidents, drug enforcement, gangs, auto thefts, missing individuals, and sexual assaults. Civil Division 

The civil division is in charge of serving other legal notices such as original notices, subpoenas, writs, domestic no contact orders, restraining orders, garnishments, and court orders to citizens within Towns County. In addition, condemnation and sheriff sales are part of the civil responsibilities of the division. By serving the various notices, the civil division acts as an extension of the court services. All notices for service by the sheriff’s office must be delivered in person or mailed. 

Finance Division 

The finance division oversees the sheriff’s office budget and is in charge of the revenue generated in Towns County. The revenue is generated by civil procedures, court fines and grants, care of prisoners, room and board, and other revenue resources. In addition, the division controls all financial activities of the sheriff’s office, which includes payable and receivable, payroll, and grand monitoring and audit reporting. Other duties by the finance division include scheduling jail time, driver’s license reinstatement, and creating payment plans for persons with outstanding court debt and board for the jail. 

Correction Division 

The correctional county facility houses inmates awaiting trial and serving time for the county. The correctional center division is responsible for inmate transportation functions and courthouse security in the Towns County courthouse. In addition, the division provides a secure and healthy environment for the inmates.
