Toombs County is located in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia and is part of the Vidalia, Georgia, Metropolitan Statistical area. The county was founded as the 144th county in Georgia by the State Legislative on August 18, 1905. It was formed from parts of Tattnall and Montgomery Counties, and a small section of Emanuel County was added to give the county its present-day boundaries. In addition, the county is named after Robert Toombs, united states representative and senator. Vidalia is the largest city in the county, while Lyons acts as the county seat.
