Tift County is located in the south-central portion of the U.S state of Georgia and is part of the Tifton, Georgia, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was founded on August 17, 1905, by an act of the General Assembly. Since the Georgia law did not allow a new county to be named after a living person, the legislature voted to name the county after Nelson Tift of Albany. He was an uncle to Henry Harding Tift. Tifton is the largest city and the county seat of Tift County, while the adjacent counties include Irwin County, Berrien County, Cook County, Colquitt County, Worth County, and Turner County.
As per the 2020 United States census, the total population of Tift County is 41344 people, with 15144 households and 10703 families living in the county. The racial composition consists of 53.67% White, 29.14% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.57% Asian, 2.85% other mixed races, and 12.62% Hispanic or Latino.
Geographically data taken from U.S. Census Bureau show that Tift County has a total area of 269 square miles (700km), whereby land occupies 259 square miles (670km) and 9.9 square miles (26km) (3,7%) is water. In addition, the western section of Tift County is located in the Little River sub-basin of the Suwannee River basin. At the same time, the northeastern part of the county is situated in the Alapaha River sub-basin of the same larger Suwannee River basin.

Tift County Sheriff’s Office

Criminal Investigation Division
The Tift County sheriff’s criminal investigation division is a full-service group that investigates a large spectrum of crimes in the county. In addition, the sheriff’s Drug Enforcement Unit operates under the Mid-South Narcotics Task Force (MSNTF) enforcement unit. The division works with other federal, state, and local agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Administration Division
The sheriff’s office administration consists of committed professional staff members who conduct various support functions. In addition, the office oversees all day-to-day operations, supervises all sheriff’s office personnel, makes personnel decisions where needed, prepares and maintains departmental budgets, and purchases equipment. Jail Division
The Tift County jail is primarily a pre-trial detention center where individuals accused of crimes who cannot bond out are held as they await their court dates. Patrol Division

The division comprises 28 sworn deputies under the direct supervision of the patrol division commander, Captain Wingate Whitley. The division is responsible for protecting the life, liberty, and property of all people in Tift County. In addition, the division performs security patrols of residential and business properties, controls the traffic, writes citations for traffic violations, and helps with all emergency calls for assistance.
