Thomas County is in the U.S. state of Georgia and is part of the Thomasville, GA, Metropolitan Statistical area. The county was formed by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on December 23, 1825, from portions of Decatur and Irwin counties. The county is named after Jett Thomas, an officer in the War of 1812, also known for overseeing the construction of the first building at the University of Georgia and the state capitol at Milledgeville. Thomasville is the largest city and serves as the county seat of Thomas County. This county neighbors Colquitt County, Brooks County, Jefferson County, Leon County, Grady County, and Mitchell County. 

According to the 2020 United States Census, the total population in Thomas County is 45798 people, with 17595 households and 12161 family units residing in the county. The racial composition of the county consists of 56.76% White, 35.5% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.06% other mixed races, and 3.44% Latino or Hispanic. 

Geographically, according to data retrieved from the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 552 square miles (1430km), whereby land occupies 544 square miles (1440km), and 7.6 square miles (20km) (1.4%) is water.

Thomas County Sheriff’s Office  

Thomas County sheriff’s office is a law enforcement agency that supports public safety in Thomas County through public policing and management of county jails and inmates. Criminal Investigation Division 

The Thomas County sheriff’s office criminal investigation consists of six investigators and one administrative assistant. Training Division 

The Thomas County sheriff’s office maintains a strong commitment to offering quality training to personnel within the office. The office has a dedicated training facility equipped with an indoor and outdoor firing range to meet the goals. In addition, the training facility consists of two large classrooms that are both equipped with digital tools. The trainers ensure the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (POST) and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement rules are met. Moreover, the training center is utilized by other local, state, and federal agencies. 

Civil Process Division 

The civil process division is responsible for filing, processing, storing, and retrieving civil records for courts. In addition, the division manages appeal documents for courts, prepares civil cost bills, and manages the adoption docket. All civil proceedings undergo scanning into the computer system. Correction Division 

Thomas County jail is a medium facility with a capacity of 480 beds and with a monthly average of 70 bookings. In addition, 64 staff members are supervising the jail. The division provides security, food services, and medical care where necessary. In addition, the correction division provides inmates with various programs which help them acquire new skills to help them to cope with life after their sentence behind bars is complete.
