About Sumter County 

Sumter County, located in southwest Georgia, was formed on December 26, 1831, and named after General Thomas Sumter of South Carolina. At the time of its formation, General Sumter was 97 years old and was the last surviving general of the American Revolution. The county was formed entirely from Lee County, situated to its south. This was four years after the Creek Indians were forced to leave the area after the state purchased it from them in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs. The largest city in Sumter County is Americus and also the county seat. Over the last ten years, the population has decreased from 32,819 in 2010 to 29,283 in 2020. 

Economy 

The economy in Sumter County has been improving over the years. In 2020 the economy was supporting about 12,490 people in terms of employment, with the largest industries being manufacturing (2,211 people), healthcare and social assistance (1,798 people), and educational services (1,365 people). The highest paying industries were transportation and warehousing ($58,826), utilities ($58,125), and real estate and rental ($51,061). 

About Sumter County Sheriff’s Office 

The Sumter County sheriff’s office has a responsibility to enforce state laws and county ordinances, protect life and property, deter criminal activity, and maintain order throughout the county. The sheriff governs the office and is assisted by the chief deputy. The office is divided into divisions that division captains lead. The divisions help in focusing on the different duties of the sheriff’s office and managing resources. 

Court/ Courthouse Security Division 

The court/ courthouse security is charged with ensuring the safety of the superior, magistrate, and juvenile court. Deputies assigned to this division protect the judges, staff, lawyers, prosecutors, juries, and visitors. They also transport inmates to court. In addition to providing security, deputies in this division also serve criminal warrants and court orders issued by the judge. 

Criminal Investigation Division 

The criminal investigation division is responsible for investigating county crimes to arrest and convict offenders. Criminal cases are allocated to different investigators trained to achieve goals and be thorough in every detail to ensure a successful prosecution and conviction when presented in court. The investigators are assisted in handling evidence by forensic experts specialized in identifying, collecting, and examining physical evidence at a crime scene. 

Animal Welfare and Control Division 

This division’s primary responsibility is to ensure that confined, farmed, and companion animals are treated humanely. The division also enforces containment laws to ensure that each animal is in a favorable environment for its species. In addition, the division regulates dangerous dogs, controls rabies, and investigates bites. 

Patrol Division 

The patrol division is the most recognized and visible division of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The deputies in this division provide law enforcement services throughout the county. They respond to emergency calls and domestic disputes. Additionally, uniformed patrol deputies patrol all county roadways, enforcing traffic laws and responding to traffic accidents. 

Jail Division 

The jail division offers inmates, facility workers, and visitors the highest level of safety, security, and services. The division runs the Sumter County Jail and oversees inmates’ activities such as programs, schedules, visitation, and phone and mail services.
