About Stewart County

Stewart county was formed on December 23, 1830, and named after Daniel Stewart, a general in the Georgia militia and the great-grandfather of U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt. The Chattahoochee River and the Alabama state line make up the entirety of Stewart County’s western border, near the fall line. The county has a total area of 464 square miles, 459 square miles covered by land, and 4.6 square miles covered by water. Per the 2010 United States Census, the county had a population of 6,058. Recent estimates done in 2021 show a decline in population to 5,341. The county’s population comprises 46% whites, 46.15% African Americans, 3.8% Asians, 34.9% Hispanics/ Latinos, and 0.7% Native Americans.

There are only two incorporated areas in Stewart, Lumpkin, and Richland. Lumpkin is the county seat with a population of 2,741. The county courthouse, built in 1895 and restored following a fire in 1923 by architect T. F. Lockwood, presides over the town square and business district.

About Stewart County Sheriff’s Office

The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office is a public service organization that serves Stewart County with law enforcement, civil, and correctional services. The sheriff’s office is structured into divisions. The sheriff is the official head and is assisted by a chief deputy who coordinates with the division majors. The majors are in charge of the divisions that perform different responsibilities within the office.

The patrol division has uniformed deputies who patrol the unincorporated areas of Stewart County, respond to emergency calls, investigate crime, make arrests, provide preventive patrol, and render assistance or aid where necessary. The patrol division has several units, such as the K-9 unit, swat, and traffic.

The investigation division handles follow-up investigations to cases that warrant further investigation beyond what the patrol division provides. The investigators serve search warrants and arrest warrants, investigate missing persons, recover stolen property, gather forensic evidence, maintain evidence, process evidence, interview victim and witnesses, and interrogate suspects.

The jail division oversees all operations inside the Stewart county jail. The jail houses inmates in service of Stewart County. The division is responsible for the inmate’s welfare, programs, services, and security. They also transport inmates for medical appointments and work programs around the county.

The sheriff’s office court division provides security services for the court. Sheriff Deputies stand in all court sessions to ensure order in the courthouse. They also transport offenders to and from the court.

Civil Processes

The civil process is one of the constitutionally mandated duties of the sheriff’s office. The office is tasked with processing and serving civil papers from the Stewart county courts and other courts throughout the country. The sheriff’s office receives these legal papers and ensures they have a signature from a judge, then serves them to citizens and businesses around the county. The sheriff’s office guarantees that these papers are served on time and returned to the court system or the plaintiff in the county they originated. Some of the civil documents served by the sheriff include summons, citations, complaints, attachments, subpoenas, probate and family court documents, evictions, and levies.

County Inmate Search

Inmate Search Through the Sheriff’s Office

The sheriff’s office manages the Stewart county jail and is responsible for providing the public with inmate information. To access the inmate records, you can visit the sheriff’s office at 1980 Broad St., Lumpkin, GA 31815. The reception desk will assist you in gaining access to the inmate list, which contains information on the inmates incarcerated in the facility, their charges, offenders with outstanding warrants, bail amounts, and court dates.

Inmate Search Using the DOC Inmate Locator

The Georgia Department of Correction records all inmates housed in county and state facilities. The DOC makes these records available on its website for the public’s convenience. The locator’s search options allow one to use the inmate’s first name, last name, gender, and race to find an inmate. The search options also include the county and state facilities in Georgia. Selecting Stewart county jail limits the search to inmates in the county facility.

The results after the search will include the inmate’s name, aliases, most current facility, hair color, eye color, mugshots, sentence, possible release date, booking date, charges, other prior crimes, height, and weight.

The DOC inmate locator has a disclaimer notice that states that the DOC does not guarantee the accuracy and completeness of the information on its website. In that regard, the DOC is not liable for any losses or harm that may arise from the misuse of the information.

Inmate Search Using VINE Link

VINE stands for victim information and notification every day. VINE communicates with the Stewart County Jail via an interface, allowing it to access information as soon as an entry is made. VINE communicates to registered members if the inmate’s status changes via text or email.

To register for the notification service, visit www.vinelink.com. Vine will send notifications on any change in the inmate’s status, such as inmate release, escape, release on probation, or parole.
