About The County Sheriff’s Office

The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office’s objective is to maintain social order within ethical and constitutional boundaries while delivering professional law enforcement services. The office is headed by the sheriff, who the people elect. The chief deputy is the sheriff’s assistant and is responsible for ensuring that the office functions as usual in the sheriff’s absence by overseeing all division majors, coordinating budget management, staffing, goal planning, and personal achievement. The sheriff’s office is divided into divisions headed by division majors.

Administration Division

The Administration Division is in charge of overall office administration and coordination of office activities such as budget administration, training, purchasing, open records, grants, and public information transmission. The division works to develop efficient ways to manage the department’s operations and improve the organizational structure and operating procedures.

Uniform Patrol Division

The Uniform Patrol Division (UPD) is the most visible in the sheriff’s office. It is in charge of patrolling the county’s unincorporated regions, enforcing traffic laws, responding to service requests, and responding to emergency 911 calls. Patrol Division consists of 39 sworn deputies grouped in four shifts, each working 12-hour days. A lieutenant assisted by a sergeant commands each shift.

Criminal Investigation Division

The criminal investigation division comprises of:

  • General investigations
  • Gang investigations
  • Crime scene investigations
  • Juvenile investigations
  • Special operations
  • Victim service units
  • School resource officers.

They all investigate different crimes and recover stolen property, gather forensic evidence, process evidence, maintain evidence, interview victim and witnesses, and interrogate suspects.

Fugitive Apprehension Division

Fugitive Apprehension locates fugitives or escapees and arranges resources for their capture.

The division has five sworn deputies who apprehend violent offenders charged with Murder, Armed Robbery, Rape, Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, and Aggravated Child Molestation.

They are also responsible for courthouse security, serving civil process papers, temporary protective orders, subpoenas, transporting people with mental health conditions, and funeral escorts.

Detention Division

The detention division is responsible for all operations in the Spalding County detention center. The detention center houses inmates before trial, after sentencing, and probation violators. Deputies in the detention division ensure the facility operates safely and efficiently and transport sick inmates to medical appointments and mental health hospitals.
