About Screven County 

Screven County was established on December 14, 1793, by state legislation. The county located in the southwest part of Georgia is named after James Screven, a general who died in Georgia during the American revolutionary war. The 2020 united states census shows that Screven county had 14,067 people, 5,098 households, and 3,395 families. African Americans comprised 37.57%, whites 57%, Native Americans 0.28%, and Asians 0.43%. The county is 656 square miles in size, with 645 square miles of land and 11 square miles (1.6%) of water. 

The county seat was relocated from Jackson Borough to Sylvania in 1847. Sylvania was founded in 1790 after the American Revolutionary War. The current courthouse in Sylvania was built in 1964 to replace a two-story brick courthouse completed in 1897. 

The board of commissioners, which serves as the governing body in Screven, is in charge of setting policy for county operations and enacting resolutions and ordinances to advance the county’s health, safety, and welfare.

The Screven Sheriff’s Office is in charge of maintaining order and safeguarding people and property in the county. The Sheriff is the head of the office and is assisted by deputies in enforcing the state and federal laws. The office is at 202 Rocky Ford Rd, Sylvania, GA 30467. 

Jail Division 

The jail division is tasked with running all operations in Screven County jail. The division ensures a secure and humane environment for the Screven County jail inmates. Deputies and guards in the jail division are trained in jail operation, management, and critical elements in regulating inmate behavior. These elements include determining the risks and needs of convicts, assigning them to cells, taking care of their basic requirements, establishing and communicating behavioral standards, supervising them, and keeping them engaged in productive activities. After training, they are certified through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.

The uniform patrol division has trained and certified deputies assigned to offer 24-hour safety and law enforcement services to Screven County residents and tourists. Their duties involve:

  • Taking incident and accident reports. 
  • Apprehending and detaining criminal offenders. 

In addition, they serve civil papers and warrants, testify in court, and conduct preliminary investigations into criminal activity. 

Administration Division 

The Sheriff’s office’s Administrative Division is the primary support section for all other divisions and units. The Sheriff is the overall administrator in the Sheriff’s office and is assisted by three administrative assistants. The jail administrator is in charge of jail operations, the warrants and civil administrator oversees all civil processes, and the evidence custodian administrator handles all evidence brought into the Sheriff’s office.
