About Richmond County
Richmond County is located on Georgia’s eastern border, bordering McDuffie County to the west, Burke County to the south, Jefferson County to the southwest, and Columbia County to the northwest. Before independence, the county was known as the parish of St. Paul under the colonial government. It was among the first counties formed by Georgia’s first constitution in 1777. The 2010 census data shows that Richmond County had 200,549 people, 76,924 households, and 48,641 families. Most people were African Americans, 54.67% of the total population, followed by whites (33.1%).
Cities and Towns
There are three incorporated municipalities in Richmond County, Augusta, Hephzibah, and Blyth. Augusta is the third largest city in Georgia and also the county seat. Augusta and Richmond have a consolidated government led by ten commissioners. Augusta has been internationally known for hosting The Master’s Golf Tournament since 1934, which attracts over 200,000 visitors from around the world.
Richmond County Sheriff’s Office
Richmond County sheriff’s office, located at 400 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30901, is responsible for the safety of lives and property within the county. The office employs over 750 people in various divisions and special units to help the sheriff’s office achieve its mission. The personnel works with the community to prevent crime and disorder, solve crime-related issues, and maintain law and order.
Jail Division
The jails division provides safe, secure, and lawful confinement of individuals committed to the county jails. The division oversees operations in two jail facilities, the Richmond County jail and the Charles B. Webster detention center. The facilities house inmates who are waiting for trial and inmates serving their sentences.
Criminal Investigation Division
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) investigates all criminal cases, such as murder, rape, burglaries, robberies, and other crimes within the county. They also recover stolen property, apprehend offenders, prepare cases for court prosecutions, and present evidence in some cases.
Community Service Division
The community service division encourages community participation in maintaining law and order. The division achieves its mission through education, safety-related programs, and policies. Court Security Division
This division provides security services for the superior, probate, domestic, and juvenile courts. It also protects the court officials and staff within the courts. The sheriff’s deputies must be present in all court proceedings stipulated by the Georgia constitution.
Traffic Division
The traffic division controls all roads within the county, ensuring that all traffic laws are followed. To decrease traffic accidents and pedestrian fatalities, the division uses data to guide its focus on the country’s problem areas.
Internal Affairs Division
The internal affairs division is responsible for receiving and investigating complaints against employees within the sheriff’s office to foster internal accountability. These complaints include officers involved in criminal activity, use of force cases, or violation of the sheriff’s office policies.
Professional Standards and Training Division (OPST)
OPST spearheads the office’s certification and accreditation efforts. Its major functions include training, oversight of field training programs, overseeing jail training programs, Georgia state certification, and the CALEA accreditation.
