Rabun County is a county in the northeastern part of the United States state of Georgia. The state legislature created the state’s 47th county in 1819 from land surrendered by the Cherokees. Rabun County was named after Georgia governor William Rabun. Later in 1821, the state legislature created the county seat, Claytonsville, named after judge Augustin Smith Clayton. At the citizen’s request, in 1823, the county seat location changed, and the town’s name was shortened to the current Clayton. The current county courthouse in this town was constructed in 1967.  

Apart from Clayton, Rabun County’s incorporated communities include Tiger, Sky Valley, Mountain City, Dillard, and part of Tallulah Falls. Numerous places in this County are included on the National Register of Historic Places. They include the Hambidge Center Historic District, the York House, Hoojah Branch Site, and Tallulah Falls Train Depot.   

According to the 2020 US census, this County had a population of 16883. It has a total area of 377 square miles.  

Rabun County Sheriff’s Office 

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office is a full-service law enforcement agency responsible for providing public safety in Rabun County, Georgia. The Office is at 56 Boen Creek Road, Tiger, Georgia 30576. The first known reference to the term “Sheriff” happens in the Book of Daniel in the Holy Bible. This term began taking modern form in medieval England when an individual assisted in maintaining law and order. The sheriffs in the American Frontier helped safeguard places in lawless territories. The Sheriff’s Office has since evolved to the modern reference as the Sheriff being a constitutional, elected officer and the principal law enforcement officer of the county.  

According to the law, the Sheriff has several mandated responsibilities, such as enforcing the State of Georgia’s criminal laws, maintaining the courts’ safety and security, serving court papers, and performing other court-related duties. The Sheriff is also responsible for operating the county jail and is solely in charge of the offenders’ safety, custody, and health.  

About the Sheriff 

Sheriff Chad Nichols is the current Sheriff of Rabun County, Georgia. The retired educator of the Rabun County School System is a veteran law enforcement professional who has utilized most of the past two decades serving and protecting the citizens of Rabun County. Sheriff Nichols joined the County Sheriff’s Office in 1998 and has risen through the ranks since then. He started his career as a jailer and then a dispatcher, became a deputy sheriff and a patrol division sergeant. During his service in the Sheriff’s Office, Nichols was active in schools as a mentor, participated in community and school events, and drafted and maintained grants.  

Before he was elected Sheriff, Nichols served as the Chief of Police in Baldwin, Georgia. He is currently serving his second term as Sheriff of Rabun County. During his career, he has completed more than 2500 hours of law enforcement education and training.  

Rabun County Jail 

Rabun County Detention Center is a medium security facility located at 175 Boen Creek Road in Tiger, Georgia. This jail currently has an inmate capacity of 102. It houses offenders from all of Rabun County, often awaiting trial or serving short sentences.

In some municipalities, you can request these records from the designated Police Department. On the other hand, the Georgia Department of Corrections maintains all state offender records.

Prisons and jails often maintain an online inmate database containing essential information on an offender or detainee. Particularly, county jails do have an inmate roster containing a list of current inmates in custody. On the other hand, state prisons utilize the inmate locator tool on the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) official website.  

Alternatively, one can utilize the numerous authorized offender locator websites online. These sites typically offer a more straightforward search criterion for statewide and nationwide searches. However, their data can vary from official channels since they are not government-sponsored.
