Quitman County is a county in the southwestern part of the United States state of Georgia. An act of the state legislature created Quitman County on December 10, 1828, becoming Georgia’s 128th County. It was named in honor of General John A. Quitman within five months of his passing. Although he never lived in Georgia, Quitman, as the governor of Mississippi in the mid-1800s, spoke persuasively, defending states’ rights. He was instrumental in shaping Georgia’s decision to secede from the Union. Therefore, the state legislature acknowledged Quitman’s popularity and named the new county after him.

Georgetown is the county seat and is the only incorporated town in Quitman County. It was initially named Tabanana, after a local creek. Early settlers in this region were the Creek Indians, who viewed the Chattahoochee River, with its abundant clear and clean waters full of fish life and snakes, in a spiritual context.

As of the 2020 Census, Quitman County’s population was 2235. It has a total area of 161 square miles.
