Putnam County is a county in the central part of the United States state of Georgia. The County has emerged from its agricultural past to become an important center of recreation and industry in Georgia. Originally, Putnam County was a land of cotton, great wealth, and vast plantations. A new look is taking hold in this area with the establishment of gated communities, golf resorts, and new businesses.

Putnam County was formed in 1807 from the sections of the neighboring Baldwin County. It was named in honor of General Israel Putnam, a Revolutionary War (1775-1783) hero and a veteran of the battles at Lexington and Breed’s (Bunker) Hill in Massachusetts. The county seat is Eatonton, incorporated in 1809 and has remained Putnam County’s only incorporated town. Farmers formed most of the area’s original settlers, and cotton became the predominant crop.

According to the 2020 census, Putnam County’s population was 22047. It is situated seventy-five miles southeast of Atlanta and covers 345 square miles.
