Polk County is the United States state of Georgia’s 96th county, established in 1851. It is located in northwest Georgia. An act of the General Assembly of Georgia created Polk County from parts of Paulding and Floyd Counties. The County was named after the eleventh United States President, James K. Polk. It comprises the Cedartown, GA, Metropolitan Statistical Area, also included in the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA, Combined Statistical Area. 

The Creek Indians initially held this area before losing it to the Cherokee Nation, before the arrival of white settlers in the 19th century. Most of the initial white settlers migrated from other parts of the state and other states soon after the discovery of gold in northwest Georgia.  

According to the US Census Bureau, Polk County has a total area of 312 square miles, including 310 square miles of land and 1.8 square miles of water. As of the 2020 census, this county had a population of 42,853.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is a full-service law enforcement agency serving Polk County, Georgia. The Sheriff is an independent Constitutional Officer tasked with providing law enforcement services within this County. Additionally, this agency provides related law enforcement services to the entire area, including service of warrants, delivery of court processes, service response, victim assistance services, and seized firearms. It is responsible for crime prevention and educational programs, animal control, assisting municipal agencies, and offering school crossing guards.  

The Sheriff’s Office administers directed patrol and investigative responsibilities in Polk County, including unincorporated regions alongside other areas that have contracted the agency to provide law enforcement services.

Through its deputies, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office provides 24-hour protection of life and property for Polk County residents. It is the biggest prison office in Polk County, arranged on five sections of land in metropolitan Cedartown.
