Oconee County is a county found in the northeastern part of the U.S state of Georgia and included in the Athens-Clarke County, GA, Metropolitan Statistical area. The county was founded on February 24, 1875, and named after the Oconee River. However, the county’s name exists in various variations, such as Ocone, Oconi, and Ekwoni. Oconee County was formed from the southwestern part of Clarke County by the Georgia Assembly after the residents demanded their county after the county seat moved from Watkinsville to Athens. The adjacent counties to Oconee County include Clarke County, Oglethorpe County, Greene County, Morgan County, Walton County, and Barrow County. 

According to numbers taken from the U.S. Census Bureau, Oconee County has a total area of 186 square miles (480km), where land takes 184 square miles (480km), and 2.1 square miles (5.4%) (1.1%) is water. In addition, Oconee County is situated in the Piedmont area of the state. At the same time, the bigger part of the county is found in the upper Oconee River sub-basin of the Altamaha River basin.  

Statistics from the 2020 United States census indicate that 41799 people, 13423 households, and 10727 families live in the county. On the other hand, the county’s racial composition consists of 81.07% White, 4.54% African American, 0.07% Native American, 4.94% Asian, 3.76% other mixed races, and 5.61% Hispanic or Latino.

Oconee County Sheriff’s Office 

Sheriff James A. Hale heads the Oconee County sheriff’s office. The mission of the sheriff’s office is to keep social order within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits while offering professional law enforcement, detention, legal paper service, and courthouse security and communications services. In addition, the office enforces the law fairly and impartially, acknowledging both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority and the constitutional rights of every citizen in the county. The Oconee County sheriff’s office aims to provide services that help victims of life, protect property and the safety of the community, provide programs and peace and public order, and offer assistance in an emergency. 

Communications/ E911 

The primary mission of the emergency 911 communications center is to offer the crucial and necessary communications link between the citizens and emergency service providers in Oconee County. Moreover, the communications center is responsible for dispatching fire, EMS, and law enforcement emergency services. The E911 operates 24 hours a day. Different officials in the division include a captain, a lieutenant, a sergeant, and a network administrator. 

Administration 

The administrative service division supports all operations of the other six divisions within the sheriff’s office. The division is responsible for finance, records, policy, and procedure, as well as civil and providing training activities for the sheriff’s office. According to Georgia records law, the Oconee County sheriff’s office must review and copy all files, records, and other various documents not prohibited by specific statutory exemptions. 

Investigations Division 

The criminal investigation division responds to any law enforcement event in Oconee County. In addition, the criminal investigation division responds to offenses against persons and property crimes, investigates crime scenes, conduct long and short-term narcotics investigations, and keeps all property and evidence for the Oconee County sheriff’s office. The division has a close workforce with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Some agencies include the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Drug Enforcement Agency, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia State Patrol, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Moreover, the division offers resources and shares intelligence with local and surrounding agencies. 

The Criminal Investigations division aims to set a high standard of excellence for others to follow and is dedicated to enhancing public safety and decreasing the fear and events of crime in the communities within Oconee County. 

Patrol Division 

The patrol division is the central, visible unit of the Oconee County sheriff’s office. The primary duty of the patrol division is to provide protection of life, individual freedom, and property, enforce laws of the county ordinances within the agency’s jurisdiction, and detention and arrest offenders. Oconee County comprises an estimated 186 square miles, segmented into six main patrol zones, and includes the cities of Bishop, Bogart, Farmington, and High Shoals. Hence, deputies are assigned to zones during their shifts, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the area and citizens within their zones. 

Jail Division 

The primary purpose of the Oconee County jail is to offer the highest standard of security for the citizens of the county and safety for the staff and the inmates currently held in the county jail. In addition, the facility provides humane care for adult male and female inmates in line with the United States and the United States and the State of Georgia Constitutions and Georgia Jail Standards.
