Newton County is a county situated in the north-central portion of the U.S state of Georgia. The county is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs Roswell, GA, Metropolitan Statistical area. Newton County was founded on December 24, 1821, and named after Sergeant John Newton, who served under General Francis Marion in the American Revolutionary War. Covington acts as the city and the county seat to Newton County, while the adjacent counties include Walton County, Morgan County, Jasper County, Butts County, Henry County, and Rockdale County. 

According to the statistics recorded from the 2020 United States census, Newton County has a total population of 112483 people, 37868 households and 28095 families living in the county. On the other hand, the racial composition includes 41.56% White, 46.45% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.93% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.44% other mixed races, and 6.37% Hispanic or Latino.

The uniform patrol unit is the largest and the pillar of the Newton County sheriff’s office. The team is the first respondent in line of service to the county’s citizens. In addition, the deputies in charge of the division provide patrol and emergency law enforcement services to the county 24 hours a day. Criminal Investigations Unit 

The criminal investigation unit is responsible for evaluating reports to the Newton Sheriff’s Office and conducting follow-up investigations to identify and bring to justice the criminal who committed the crime. The types of crimes the criminal investigation division investigates include: 

  • Crimes against the property; include burglaries, theft by taking, forgeries, and auto theft. 
  • Crimes against Persons include murder, aggravated assaults, rape, kidnappings, sexual assaults, and armed robberies.

Detention Center 

The detention center is in charge of the care, custody, and control of inmates, protection of offenders’ rights, and the delivery of inmate programs and health care services. The administrative support and detention operations sections are essential to the divisions’ day-to-day operations, such as housing unit, classification, release, kitchen, inmate’s property, laundry, bonding, inmate commissary, data entry, accounting, records retention, visitation, and transport control. In addition, the detention center ensures inmates acquire various programs such as GED, Alcoholics Anonymous and Fatherhood, and Brotherhood and Motherhood programs. 

Court Services Unit 

The court services unit is in charge of fulfilling the sheriff’s constitutional responsibility to offer comprehensive law enforcement and security services to the courts of Newton County. In addition, the sheriff’s deputies and support staff maintain courtroom security by protecting citizens, jurors, judges, and inmates during court hearings. 

Special Investigations Unit 

The particular investigations unit consists of Newton County sheriff’s office agents. The agents investigate cases concerning narcotics and other vice offenses that occur within the county and regularly perform duties in conjunction with the state and federal agencies. 

The Newton County sheriff’s office has introduced an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) program to help decrease crimes’ operational elements.
