Murray County is located in the northwestern part of the U.S state of Georgia. The county is part of the Dalton Metropolitan statistical area, which is included in the Chattanooga Cleveland- Dalton, TN, all combined statistical area. Murray County was founded in 1932, formerly a section of Cherokee County, and named after a distinguished Georgia statesman from Lincoln County, Mr. Thomas W.Murray, a former speaker of the Georgia house. Chatsworth is the county seat, while the adjacent counties include Polk County, Fannin County, Gilmer County, Gordon County, Whitfield County, and Bradley County.
Geographically, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, Murray County has a total area of 347 square miles (900km), of which land occupies 344 square miles (890km) and 2.2 square miles (5.7km) (0.6%) occupied by water. The main part of Murray County is located in the Conasauga River sub-basin.
