Murray County is located in the northwestern part of the U.S state of Georgia. The county is part of the Dalton Metropolitan statistical area, which is included in the Chattanooga Cleveland- Dalton, TN, all combined statistical area. Murray County was founded in 1932, formerly a section of Cherokee County, and named after a distinguished Georgia statesman from Lincoln County, Mr. Thomas W.Murray, a former speaker of the Georgia house. Chatsworth is the county seat, while the adjacent counties include Polk County, Fannin County, Gilmer County, Gordon County, Whitfield County, and Bradley County.  

Geographically, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, Murray County has a total area of 347 square miles (900km), of which land occupies 344 square miles (890km) and 2.2 square miles (5.7km) (0.6%) occupied by water. The main part of Murray County is located in the Conasauga River sub-basin. In contrast, the county’s southeastern corner is located in the Coosawattee River sub-basin in the same larger Act River Basin.

The Murray County 911 Center works 24 hours a day and is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls for service within Murray County. The 911 unit monitors and reports weather conditions for the safety of the citizens, visitors, and public safety personnel. Moreover, the unit coordinates with multi-agency responses to calls that require the assistance of more than one department. Victim/ Witness Assistance Program 

Victims of various types of crimes have rights and responsibilities under Georgia Law, known as the Victim’s Bill of rights. Under this law, victims have the right to b notified of: 

  • The arrest of the accused 
  • Any court sessions where the release of the offender will be considered 
  • Court proceedings during the prosecution of the case 
  • Availability of compensation for victims of violent crime 
  • Parole or change of status of the defendant, if you request in writing 
  • Release dates of the accused 
  • Availability of victim service programs 

In addition, the law states that victims have the right to express their opinions on the release dates of the accused pending court proceedings and complete a victim impact statement.
