Morgan County was formed from Baldwin County on December 1807 by an act of the General Assembly. Morgan is Georgia’s 30th county named after Revolutionary War general and later Virginia’s Congressman, Daniel Morgan, mostly remembered for his victory over the British at Cowpens in 1971. Madison acted as the county seat and was designed in 1808 and incorporated in 1809. In addition, the adjacent counties to Morgan County include Oconee County, Greene County, Putnam County, Jasper County, Newton County, and Walton County. Since the 21st century, the county has had a housing boom, Lake Oconee, a recreation site, and major employment centers, including Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, and Macon.

Administration Division

Uniform Patrol Division 

A uniform deputy is in charge of the three patrol zones to decrease crime and reduce response time for calls for service. The backup units come from the closest zone to the call for assistance. The patrol division’s duties include executing all court orders, handling unique details, transporting inmates in and out of state, and answering all service calls. In addition, the uniform patrol division strategically and proactively patrols Morgan County’s 350 square miles 24 hours a day. 

Criminal Investigation Division 

The criminal investigation division is responsible for various duties, including:

  • Initiates narcotics and drug investigations throughout the Morgan County

Detention Center 

The adult detention center division offers 24/7 security for pre-trial detainees and convicted individuals for less than one year. In addition, the division is responsible for inmate security and health care. Through the divisions, the inmates receive various programs which help them acquire new skills to help them fit into the community after their sentence. 

Court Services Division 

The court services division ensures the security of the Morgan County court houses is maintained. On the other hand, the assigned personnel support the superior court, the magistrate court, and the probate court while in court hearing sessions. 

Communications-E911 

The 911 center is an easy-to-remember method of reaching the proper law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services agencies. The center provides a three-digit dialing and intelligent routing, over-committed phone lines, from any telephone to the dispatch center in the part where the phone is calling. If someone makes a call, the caller’s address and telephone number at the dispatch center displays for reference. After the dispatch center receives the calls, the trained individuals send the required emergency help. The Morgan County 911 dispatches all public safety, including the police, sheriff’s department, and emergency services agencies. The emergency services agencies include fire, rescue, and EMS in the county. 

Programs 

The Morgan Sheriff’s office is responsible for providing different programs within the office. Some of the programs provided by the office include crime tips, code red, public safety cadets, gun license, handgun safety classes, inmate work detail, reserve unit, active shooter class, and neighborhood watch.
