Monroe County is situated in the U.S. State of Georgia. The county was founded on May 15, 1821, and named after James Monroe, an American statesman, lawyer, diplomat, and founding father who ruled as the fifth president of the united state from 1817-1825. Forsyth acts as the county seat to Monroe County, while the adjacent counties include Butts County, Jasper County, Jones County, Bibb County, Crawford County, Upson County, and Lamar County. In addition, Monroe County is included in the Macon, GA, Metropolitan Statistical Area. 

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county’s total area is 398 square miles (1030), whereby land takes 396 square miles (1030km), and water occupies 2.2 square miles (5.7%)  (0.5%). In addition, the broad area of Monroe County is located in the upper Ocmulgee River sub-basin of the Altamaha River basin, with just a tiny southwestern corner of the county located in the upper Flint River sub-basin of the ACF River Basin. 

Data taken from the 2020 United States census indicate that the county has a total population of 27,957 people, 9760 households and 6179 families living in the county. Moreover, the Monroe County racial composition includes 71.37% White, 21.76% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 3.33% mixed races, and 2.55% Latino or Hispanic.

The Monroe County sheriff’s office provides OffenderWatch for the citizens. OffenderWatch is a tool where you can get the most accurate and timely information about a sex offender around your area. Since offenders move frequently, the sex offender search will help you know the whereabouts of a sex offender. Instead of checking the maps weekly, you can stay informed by the alert system. Using the service is free, and you can register as many addresses in the county as you wish. 

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office 

The Monroe County sheriff’s office is responsible for executing and returning processes ad orders of the courts, transporting incarcerated inmates for court hearings, and maintaining records of all individuals sentenced. In addition, the office is in charge of providing security for the county courthouse and any courthouse annex. 

Administration Division 

The administration staff performs many daily operations for the sheriff’s office, including hiring, human resources, recruitment, accreditation, finance, and public information. 

Investigation Division 

The Criminal Investigation division consists of five investigators whose prominent assigned cases are crimes against the person, auto, property, financial, and identity theft, and one whose primary responsibility is evidence collection and scene investigations. Five additional investigators are assigned to narcotic investigations and other vice crimes, including alcohol, gambling, and prostitution. 

Patrol Division 

The patrol division is in charge of law enforcement services to the citizens of Monroe County. There are an estimated 35 deputies assigned to the field operation division, divided into three units. The deputies patrol the more significant part of nearly 4oo square miles of land that make up Monroe County and serve a total population of approximately 26,000. The deputy sheriffs work an assigned shift, patrolling a designated zone and performing law enforcement responsibilities. Other duties include arrests, traffic enforcement, executing warrants, and conducting preliminary criminal investigations. On the other hand, the field operations division works to meet a high level of professional service standards for Monroe County residents. 

MCSO Victim Services 

The Monroe County Sheriff’s office victim services unit is a mix of Child Advocacy Center and Victim/ Witness program. The sheriff’s office acknowledges the importance of practical assistance to innocent victims in the county. Hence, to offer high core-level victims services, the Victim Services location was opened in 1991. The Victim Services location is a temporary, non-threatening, friendly environment so that all victims, especially children, can feel safe. In addition, victim services help victims to stay informed at the center of the criminal justice process. In 2020, MCSO Victim Services offered 3300 services to over 1000 victims, 71 one those being due to domestic violence and 45 due to child abuse. 

Support Services/ Central Records 

Central records are part of the support services division and offer the requester officer information reports, customized crime reports, 911 audio, incident report, accident reports, and other personalized details requests. The cost of the requested records is determined by the lowest hourly waged person finishing the request and any material provided, for instance, paper, audio, or videotapes. However, there are no charges inquired for the first 15 minutes. Georgia State Law governs the open records requests. Inmate Support Services 

The Monroe County sheriff’s office provides a safe environment for incarcerated inmates. On the other hand, the office ensures the provision of the following services;  

  • Food services: Inmates are served three meals per day. The meal is prepared, transported, and administered by individuals approved by the County Health Department
  • Medical services: Medically trained individuals offer health and medical services. All medication must be prescribed or approved by the licensed facility Physician
  • Commissary 
  • Inmates are allowed to purchase items and snacks from McDaniel’s Supply Company. All items bought are deducted from the inmate’s commissary account, which the Detention Center maintains.
