Mitchell County was founded on December 21, 1857, and became the 123rd county in Georgia. The county was formed out of Baker County in 1857. Historians have two stories for the origin of its name; it is either named after either General David B. Mitchell, twice governor of Georgia or General Henry Mitchell, a one-time state Senator for the area. Camilla serves as the county seat, while the adjacent counties include Dougherty County, Worth County, Thomas County, Colquitt County, Grady County, Decatur County, and Baker County. Moreover, Mitchell County is home to three other cities: Baconton, Pelham, and sale city. According to reports from the census, the total number of people is 21755, and 7982 households and 5454 families residing in the county. On the other hand, the racial composition comprises 46.45% White, 46.21% African American, 0.17% Native American, and 0.5% Asian. 2.23% other mixed races and 4.43% Latino or Hispanic.

C.H.A.M.P.S Division
Scott Raley is the C.H.A.M.PS instructor in Mitchell County. The division’s mission is to offer an educational program to Georgia’s youth, which provides guidance and the skills, ability, and knowledge to stay safe, healthy, and happy in preparation for a successful life. Since today’s youth face dangers the older generation could not have seen, the Sheriff’s Association saw the need to form Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety, which was formed in 2003 to address these urgent problems. The program includes long hour lesson from a certified deputy sheriff, and the subjects taught includes:

- ATV Safety
- Gangs and Violence
- Peer Pressure
- Water Safety
The program mostly targets fifth graders. The program is offered to every school in Mitchell County and is currently offered in the following schools, Mitchell County Middle, Pelham Elementary, and Westwood.
Patrol Division
The Uniform Patrol Division is the biggest and most visible function of the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office. The division is the first service to the citizens of the county and is commanded by a patrol captain with the assistance of an administrative lieutenant. The deputies allocated to this division offer patrol and emergency law enforcement services to Mitchell County 24 hours a day. In addition, the patrol division patrols and answers all calls for service within the county and provides law enforcement services to the cities. Criminal Investigation Unit
The Criminal Investigation division’s duties include evaluating reported issues to the Mitchell County sheriff’s office, where actionable details are developed, and performing follow-up investigations to identify and bring the offender responsible for the crime. Crimes against persons include rape, murder, aggravated assaults, kidnapping, sexual assaults, and armed robberies.
Crimes against property include auto thefts, theft by taking, burglaries and forgeries.
Correction Division
The correction division is in charge of the care, control, and custody of inmates, protection of inmate rights, and delivery of inmate programs and medical services. The correction division’s administration support and detention operations sections are important to the day-to-day operations of the division: housing unit, identification, classification, intake, release, kitchen, inmate property, laundry, bonding, inmate commissary, data entry, accounting, records retention, visitation, and transport control. Moreover, the division is responsible for providing rehabilitative and educational opportunities through coordinating community resources so inmates can ready themselves for productive citizenship upon returning to their communities. For instance, program members without high school diplomas are offered to attend 60 hours of General Educational Development (GED) classes.
