McDuffie County is on the geographical fall line in East Central Georgia, along the Savannah River. It was named after George McDuffie, a native Georgian and distinguished lawyer, governor, statesman, and U.S. senator of South Carolina. According to the most recent United States Bureau census data held in 2010, the population of McDuffie County was 21,875. However, it has grown to 1.33% since that time. Consequently, it ranks as the 83rd largest county in Georgia in terms of population. Its mission is to extend lifelong learning to Georgia through offering unbiased, research-based education in the environment, agriculture, communities, youth, and families.

In the late 1870s, McDuffie County was carved from Columbia and Warren counties by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. Even though McDuffie is relatively small and postbellum in its formation, it boasts a sizeable colonial and political heritage that often predates the county’s official inception by at least a century. Cotton is the cash crop that has created the bulk of McDuffie County’s wealth.

A while back, McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office initiated a community program called Youth Homes.

Youth Homes Program

Many residents of McDuffie County, especially children, face overwhelming odds, such as having one of their parents locked up in prison; they may have been abused or even abandoned as infants. Others have been homeless for the majority of their lives. These children are often in a bad situation, even if the fault is not theirs.

This program began in 1950 when many Georgia Sheriffs became increasingly concerned about the rising numbers of neglected, abandoned, and abused children. They understood how vital it was, not only for the children but for the county and the state.

Consequently, in 1960, the Sheriffs opened Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, where children could learn different things such as:

  • How to overcome adversities
  • How to have moral, values, and spiritual awareness
  • Personal responsibilities and hygiene
  • Teamwork and accepting authority

Youth Homes also has an outdoor program called a Summer Camp Program which is offered to children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor experience.

The Sheriff states that gifts to these Youth Homes are essential since it is not just an investment in the lives of vulnerable, needy kids but an investment in the very future of the county and the state. These gifts would also help underprivileged children to grow and become responsible adults and parents. By gifting these Homes, you fund:
