Macon County, Georgia’s 91st county, is a relatively rural area that was created in 1837 from parts of Houston and Marion Counties. It was named in honor of Congressman General Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Macon County has a population of 14,263. D.A.R.E. Program
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office takes pride in being part of this program. The program was started by a group of school teachers and police officers who were concerned since kids were taking drugs. They joined forces and launched this program whose main aim was to teach kids about the dangers that may occur due to the use of drugs and violence and how to protect themselves from it. This program’s mission was to steer kids away from dangerous drugs and help them focus on more constructive activities like playing sports or starting new hobbies instead of using drugs and hanging out on the streets. With the aid of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, D.A.R.E. Program is now taught in all counties and states in the U.S. as well as in 53 countries.

Project Lifesaver
Robert Holland, Macon County Sheriff, led the public in the implementation of a new program called Project Lifesaver. Project Lifesaver program is a search and rescue program that majorly targets persons enrolled in the program who tend to wander due to Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down-Syndrome, and other age macular degeneration relation disorders.
This program deploys radio technology to locate, rescue, and return home missing individuals enrolled in this program. Every person enrolled in Project Lifesaver Program must wear a personalized wristband transmitter at all times. This transmitter emits a tracking radio signal 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, each wristband has a separate and unique radio frequency.
The County Sheriff’s Office consists of four trained and certified instructors and operators together with six additional officers who are trained operators of rescue radio equipment and the search. Their main job is to stay alert in case a client wanders, and the SSheriff’sOffice is alerted.
