About Jackson County
Jackson County is located on the northeastern side of Georgia. The county was founded in 1796 and named in honor of a revolutionary war lieutenant colonel, senator, congressman, and governor James Jackson. Currently, the county covers 343 square miles, with only 1% covered by water. Most of its land was lost in the formation of Madison, Clarke, Walton, Gwinnett, Banks, Barrow, and Hall counties. The 2010 census reveals that Jackson County had a population of 60,485.
The county’s seat was initially in Clarksboro but was later moved to Jefferson City. Jefferson was earlier known as Thomocoggan, but in 1804 the name was changed to Jefferson after Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States.
The first courthouse was built using logs on the south side of the public square. In 1817 a second court was built using brick and had two floors. A third one was constructed in 1880 on the square’s north side and served the county until 2004 when the current courthouse was built.
