About Irwin County 

Irwin County was founded on December 15, 1818, and named after governor Jarred Irwin, who served the state as governor for two terms. The county is located in the southeast region of Georgia as the state’s 41st county. Irwin is among the leading counties in agriculture, with over 145,000 acres of land devoted to farming. The county also has a rich history, as it was here in 1865 that Confederate States President Jefferson Davis was captured by US cavalry. Cook, Colquitt, Lanier, Lowndes, Brooks, Atkinson, and Echols, among other counties, all received land from Irwin County when they were formed, as have the majority of the counties that surround Irwin. 

The county has a population of 9,538 people and an area of 363 square miles. The county seat is Ocilla city, part of the Fitzgerald Metropolitan statistical area. Ocilla was first incorporated as a town in 1897 and later re-incorporated as a city in 1902.

Patrol Division 

The patrol division is in charge of policing the county’s physical borders. They handle all complaints about criminal activity and emergencies within the county. Most deputies in the patrol division wear uniforms and are very noticeable. The divisions also patrol all roads in the county to ensure that motorists observe the traffic laws.  

Administrative Division 

The administrative division ensures that the sheriff’s office’s daily operations are carried out effectively and efficiently. The division continually strives to find effective ways to administer the department’s affairs and improve the organization’s system and operating procedures. The division’s duties include recruitment, training, community outreach, budgeting, procurement, planning, record keeping, dispatch, and management. 

Civil Division 

The civil division’s role is to serve legal documents throughout the county and enforce court orders. Some of the legal documents served by the sheriff include foreclosures, eviction notices, summonses, injunctions for protection, petitions for dissolution, warrants, seizures, and subpoenas. The division makes some of the services it provides chargeable and uses the revenue to fund its operations, saving the taxpayers money.  

The civil division also provides security services for the Irwin courthouse. The constitution of Georgia requires the sheriff to be present during all court sessions or send a deputy on the sheriff’s behalf. The sheriff’s office is also responsible for transporting inmates from the detention center to the courthouse and back.  

Correctional Division 

Irwin’s sheriff’s department oversees all operations in the county jail through the correctional division. The sheriff is responsible for the welfare of all inmates in the Irwin County detention center. Irwin detention center is a min-max that can hold 1,201 inmates. Irwin County provides an online platform that has records of all inmates in the county jail. The information on the site is about inmates who have been sentenced, are being held by other law enforcement agencies, and are waiting for their convictions. These records are a combination of every entry made from the time an inmate is arrested to the time they are released from jail. Records on juvenile offenders and those under protective custody are not included on the site since they are considered confidential by the freedom of information act.

Locating an Inmate Using the Sex Offender Registry 

The sex offender registry contains the names of all offenders convicted of committing a sexual offense. Child molestation, aggravated kid molestation, luring a child for indecent reasons, statutory rape, sodomy, aggravated sodomy, rape, aggravated sodomy, and sexual battery with a child are the different types of sexual offenses. Offenders convicted of any of the crimes mentioned above must register with the sheriff’s office upon release or entering the county. Each offender’s information appears on the sheriff’s office website, including name, mugshot, sex, hair color, address, city, year of birth, offense, eye color, weight, race, and registration date.
