About The County

Houston County is the center-most county in Georgia, named after John Houston, a renowned lawyer and statesman from Georgia. The county was formed on May 15, 1821, and one year later, its size was reduced to accommodate Bibb, Crawford, Pike Peach, and Macon Counties. Houston, Georgia, had a population of 139,900 by April 1, 2010. By July 1, 2021, the population is estimated to have increased to 166,829. The county has a land area of 376.05 square miles and a water area of 4.4 square miles.

Houston County’s seat is Perry City, which was founded in 1823, two years after the county’s formation. The city, located near the center of the county, was initially named Watt Ville but later changed to Perry to honor Oliver Hazard Perry, a war hero, in 1812. Perry was incorporated on December 9, 1824. Every year in October, Perry plays host to the Georgia National Fair on the Georgia National Fairgrounds.

About The County Sheriff’s Office

Houston County sheriff’s office has two locations, one at 202 Carl Vinson Parkway, Warner Robins, GA 31088, and another at 201 Perry Parkway, Perry, GA 31069. The sheriff’s office is charged with enforcing the laws of Georgia, protecting life and property, preserving social tranquility and safety, arresting lawbreakers, preventing civil disorder, maintaining county jails and providing services to inmates, and providing security services in county courts. The crime investigators collect, analyze, and preserve evidence to help solve cases. Emergency response in the sheriff’s office receives all E-911 calls and dispatches law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and emergency medical services. The office also maintains and updates the sex offender registry and visits sex offenders’ houses quarterly. Deputies also patrol all roads within the county and enforce the traffic rules.

The sheriff’s office also has other responsibilities within the county, such as raffle license information and code enforcement.

Raffle License Information

The sheriff’s office issues raffle licenses per Georgia’s raffle license law. Before selling any raffle tickets, organizations should acquire a raffle license from the sheriff’s office. Organizations must exist 24 months before applying for a raffle license, and the applicant must be 18 years old or above.

The raffle application must show the following to qualify:

  • A list of all elected officers in the organization
  • Name of members of the board of directors
  • List of members allowed to operate the raffles on behalf of the organization
  • List of people, organizations, or legal entities that will act as surety for the applicant
  • Letter from the Internal Revenue Service
  • Letter from the Georgia Department of Revenue

Code Enforcement

The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for enforcing all the county codes, except for the health and building codes, which the state environmental health department enforces, and the building inspector’s office. The sheriff’s office investigates potential code violations, advises violators of the codes, and then gives them fifteen days to correct the violation. Citizens can report any code violation by calling the code enforcement officers at 542-2102.

County Inmate Search

When a loved one is arrested and taken to jail, locating them and finding the purpose of their arrest can be stressful, especially if you have no clue where to begin. Enactment of the freedom of information act ensured that all government bodies provided the general public with information. The Act considers inmate information public records; therefore, the Houston County jail must make the records accessible to the public.

Houston County Inmate Search Using the Jail Roll

The sheriff’s office provides the information on the Houston County website. Information on the site includes inmates currently incarcerated in the county jail, inmates released within the last 30 days, and inmates incarcerated and released within 30 days. The search parameters allow one to search using the inmate’s name. If the first parameter fails, the engine provides you with other options to help narrow down the search. The first column will show the inmate’s name followed by gender, race, date of birth, jail location, date and time of incarceration, and date of release. Filling out one of these selections will bring up a list of names that fit the description, from which you can select the inmate you’re searching. The information on the website may lack accuracy, so the Houston County sheriff’s office does not take responsibility for any harm caused by wrongful use of the information.

Inmate Search after Transfer to the DOC’s Custody

The security level of an inmate or the sentence handed by the court determines where the inmate is incarcerated. Offenders arrested in Houston County can be transferred from the county jail to a state facility after a valuation of their security level is done or after a court ruling.

When this occurs, their records and whereabouts are easily accessible via the Georgia Department of Correction. The website has an offender search locator that contains information on all inmates in state-run facilities. The records can assist you in determining the inmate’s jail location, release date, and description of their charges and sentence. The search options on the locator include:

  • Search by first and last name
  • Search by address
  • Search by DOC number
