About Hart County 

Hart County was formed on December 7, 1853, and named after Nancy Morgan Hart, a tough, resourceful rebel woman of the American revolutionary war. The county is located on the northeast side of Georgia and occupies an area of 257 square miles. The 2010 United States census shows that hart county had a population of 25,213 people, 10,121 households, and 6,998 families living in the county.  The data further indicates that 77 % were white, 18 % Africa American. 0.9 % Asian, 0.1 % American Indians, and 1.7 % from other races. The county seat is Hartwell, founded in 1854 after the county’s formation. Hartwell was incorporated as a town in 1856, and later in 1904, it was incorporated as a city. 

The county offers many recreational opportunities along Lake Hartwell, which has beautiful parks, marinas, campsites, golf courses, and boats. Families in Hart County engage in several recreational activities such as;

Hart County Sheriff’s Office 

Hart county sheriff’s office is located at 100 Main Street Munfordville, KY  42765, and operates from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The office act as an independent department charged with protecting the citizens of Hart County and their property. The sheriff’s office runs the hart county jail, where they detain inmates and supervise their sentences. Patrol deputies in the sheriff’s office help maintain and enforce law and order in Hart County.  

Court Services 

The sheriff’s office is responsible for providing all circuit, district, juvenile, and family courts with security during court sessions. The official code of Georgia annotated (O.C.G.A.) states that the sheriff is required to attend, by himself or his deputy, all sessions of the superior court and the probate court, and whenever required by the judge.  

The code further states that the sheriff should carry out and return the processes and orders of the courts and officers of competent authority. The sheriff also enters all records of all sales made by the court process. 

Tax Collection 

Hart county sheriff’s office collects property taxes for the state, county, and school districts. The Hart County Property Valuation Administration assesses the properties and determines the amount they owe, which the sheriff’s office collects. All tax bills are sent out by early November and include a due date, penalties, and the amount due.

Auto Inspection 

The sheriff’s office in Hart County inspects all vehicles purchased in another state before issuing a Hart county license plate. For the car to pass the inspection, it must comply with the provisions of KRS Chapter 189 on the vehicle’s condition. The vehicle must operate safely on the highway and should safely transport people and goods. The vehicle’s brakes, headlights, rear lights, turn signals, steering, and windscreen wipers should be fully operable. The vehicle’s identification number should also match the certificate of origin. Once cleared, the form is taken to the county clerk, where a license plate is issued.

Hart county jail website provides an online list of all inmates in the jail.  You can scroll on the list and find the inmate’s name, which will have all the information collected from arrest to incarceration. The information on the list can include the inmate’s mugshots, full name, sex, age, height, alias, race, weight, sentence, charges, and court dates. The list also allows you to use the search option by keying in the inmate’s first and last name or identification number 

The online list is not regularly updated and may sometimes lack all the information one needs. In such an instance, one can opt to contact the information desk directly at 270-524-2571.  

Locating an Inmate Using VINE 

VINE stands for victim information and notification every day. It is a free notification service that helps one acquire information on all inmates in any state or county. Hart County is no exception, as it gives VINE access to inmate records so that the general public can access them with ease.  The search option allows one to use the following items; 

  • Inmate’s first and last name 
  • Middle name 
  • Date of birth 
  • Arrest date 
  • ID number 

Any changes in the status of an inmate are automatically updated in the VINE servers within 15 minutes through an interface with the jail’s booking system.  The service also allows victims to register for a notification service that sends a text or an email notifying one of any change in the inmate’s custody status. These changes may include; 

  • Release from custody 
  • Release on probation or parole 
  • Escape 
  • Return to custody for any reason 
  • Transfer to another facility 
  • Unsupervised custody
