About Haralson County 

Haralson county was created in 1956 from sections of Carroll and Pork counties and named after Hugh A. Haralson, a U.S. congressman and state legislator. The county is located in northwest Georgia and covers 282 square miles. The 2010 United States census shows that the county had 28,780 people, 10,757 households, and 7820 families, an increase from the 2000 population of 25,690. According to the report, the majority of people were white (92.8%), followed by African Americans (4.7%), Asians (0.5%), American Indians (0.2%), and others (0.4%). 

Haralson has an operational train system built in the 1880s connecting towns like Bremen and Tallapoosa. The historic railroad attracts a group of tourists, known as the railfans, who love the old locomotive engines. 

The county seat is in Buchanan, a town named after U.S.  President James Buchanan in 1857. The current courthouse was constructed in 1972, while the earlier one built in 1891 was placed on the national register of historic places and now houses the Buchanan- Haralson Historical Society and the Haralson Public Library. 

About The County Sheriff’s Office  

The sheriff’s office is the highest-ranking law enforcement body in Haralson County, located at 137 Hayes Glass Drive, Bremen, GA 30110. Sheriffs in Haralson are independently elected and have vast experience and education in law enforcement. Haralson county sheriff’s office has four divisions, namely the criminal investigation division, the patrol division, the special operations division, and the detention division. 

Criminal Investigative Division 

The criminal investigative division responds and investigates all major crimes committed in Haralson County. Each case is assigned to an investigator in the division assisted by a crime scene technician and several deputies. The crime scene technician identifies, collects, and preserves evidence at a crime scene. They help the investigation by taking advanced photography, analyzing blood patterns, reconstructing shooting incidents, collecting trace evidence, and conducting death investigations.      

The criminal investigative division deals with crimes that fall under these categories; 

  • Property crimes like burglaries and theft of vehicles

Patrol Division 

The patrol division has two primary functions: one is to respond to all complaints about criminal activity, civil issues, and emergencies, and the other is to patrol the physical boundaries of Haralson County. Deputies in the patrol division work 12-hour shifts on rotation, and their primary duty is to patrol roads in Haralson and stop motorists who violate traffic laws.  

Special Operations Division 

The special operations division deals with courthouse security, sex offender registry, civil division, interdiction, and crime suppression.  The division assigns bailiffs and deputies to provide security in the superior, probate, magistrate, and juvenile court during court sessions. Deputies in the courthouse also assist in taking fingerprints for gun permits and court purposes. The special operation through the civil division serves paperwork for the courts and other jurisdictions. Paperwork may include eviction notices and judgments rendered by the courts.   

The special operations division has a sex offender registry officer responsible for registering and making quarterly visits to all sex offenders in the county. The division also runs interdiction operations focusing on illegal drugs coming into and through Haralson County.
