Habersham County is a county situated in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The county was founded on December 15, 1817, and named after Colonel Joseph Habersham of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. Habersham County is part of the larger Cornelia metropolitan statistical area. Clarkesville is the county seat and the neighboring counties include Rabun County, Oconee County, Stephens County, Banks County, Hall County, White County, and Towns County. 

As per the 2020 United States Census, the total number of people in this county is 46031, with 15139 households and 10440. On the other hand, the Habersham County racial composition includes 75.37% White, 3.74% African American, 0.18% Native American, 2.15%  Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.53% mixed raves, and 14.95% Latino. 

Moreover, Habersham County has a total area of 279 square miles (720km), where land occupies 277 square miles (720km) while water takes 2.3 square miles (6.0km) (0.8%). In addition, the county is situated within the Blue Ridge Mountains, a part of the Appalachian Mountains. Moreover, Habersham County is primarily located in the upper Chattahoochee sub-basin of the A.C.F. River Basin, with the northeastern corner of Habersham county situated in the Tugaloo River sub-basin in the larger Savannah River basin, and the southeastern portion located in the Broad River sub-basin of the same Savannah River basin. 

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office 

The Habersham County sheriff’s office is staffed with a diversified workforce of sworn and civilian personnel trained to protect and serve the county’s needs. The office is determined to enforce the law and perform its duties reasonably, equitably, and justly. In addition, the sheriff’s office provides physical security in the courtrooms and courthouse, transportation of mentally ill individuals of the county to mental health emergency receiving facilities, and serving all court summons. Moreover, the office executes all court-ordered levies on property to satisfy judgments in court actions. 

Detention Center 

The sheriff is the official detainer of the county and is in charge of the health, safety, and welfare of all inmates. The Habersham County detention center houses inmates awaiting trial or sentenced to one year or less. The sheriff’s office ensures that inmates are treated reasonably and professionally as required by law and are provided with various programs such as G.E.D. and religious programs. 

Criminal Investigations Division 

The Habersham County sheriff’s office criminal investigative division is a full-service unit investigating various crimes in the county. The division and the uniform patrol division collaborate regarding crimes committed and reported. The criminal investigation division responds to and assumes investigative authority over all major cases and crimes scene within Habersham County. In addition, the division specializes in conducting wide-based investigations, processing crime scenes, and conducting surveillance and undercover operations. Some of the crimes investigated by the division include property crimes, personal crimes, and financial crimes. 

Administration Division 

The sheriff’s office consists of division heads whose primary duty is to control operations under the sheriff’s jurisdiction. In addition, the division brings decades of valuable experience and knowledge to the daily operations of Habersham County. 

Civil Division 

The civil division is committed to offering professional security services to the courts of Habersham County to keep the integrity of the judicial process and ensure the safety of those who work in or visit court facilities. Other duties performed by the civil division include out-of-state extraditions, serving civil and criminal subpoenas and summonses on victims, witnesses and defendants, and serving other civil and criminal court papers. 

Uniform Patrol 

The uniform patrol division is the pillar of all the Habersham County sheriff’s office components. The division’s duties include responding to emergency calls for service, enforcing state and federal laws, and performing crime prevention patrols. The division consists of P.O.S.T. certified officers who offer 24-hour law enforcement services to the public and visitors of Habersham County. Habersham County is segmented into specific zones based on several factors, such as coverage, response times, population density, and calls for service. The deputies rotate zone coverage to ensure familiarity with all geographical areas within Habersham County. Each shift consists of one sergeant, one corporal, and offices. In addition, the corporal serves as a field training officer whose duties include training new members of the uniform patrol division.
