Gwinnett County is situated in the north-central portion of the U.S state of Georgia. The county forms part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was founded on December 15, 1818, and named after Button Gwinnett, one of the signatories of the country’s declaration of independence. Gwinnett County is included in the Atlanta Sandy Springs- Roswell, GA, Metropolitan statistical area. Lawrenceville is the county seat, and its borders Forsyth County, Hall County, Jackson County, Walton County, Rockdale County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County. 

According to the 2020 United States Census, the total number of people in this county is 957062, with about 301471 households and 230,960. Moreover, the Gwinnett County racial comprises White 32.45%, African American 26.87%, Native American 0.16%, Asian 13.22%, Pacific Islander 0.04%, other mixed races 4.23%, and 23.04% Hispanic or Latino. 

Geographically, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 437 square miles (1130km), whereby land takes 430 square miles (1120km), and water occupies 6.4 square miles (17km) (1.5%). 

Gwinnett County is controlled by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which exercises legislative and executive authority within the county. In addition, the board’s chairman is elected county-wide and serves full-time. The other four commissioners are chosen from single-member districts and do part-time positions. 

Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office 

The Gwinnett County sheriff’s office’s mission is to serve and protect the citizens through dedication, professionalism, active cooperation with the public, and respect for human dignity. On the other hand, the goal of the sheriff’s office in Gwinnett County is to provide services that assist victims of domestic abuse and contribute to preserving life, property protection, and community safety. Other responsibilities of the office include providing safe and humane treatment of inmates and those awaiting legal adjudication, maintaining individual professionalism through comprehensive training, and establishing policies, programs, and procedures. 

Administrative Service Division 

The sheriff is the elected official in charge of the administration and operation of all services within the agency. The division supports the chief in all administrative areas, maintains sectional financial and performance procedures and employee bookkeeping, and manages different projects as directed by the chief. The administrative service division includes the following;

Support Operation Division 

Support operation division offers necessary support to all divisions within Gwinnett County. In addition, the division is responsible for strengthening community relations and trust, providing community elated crime prevention programs. Moreover, the division ensures all inmates receive housing, counseling, job skills, substance abuse treatment, crime prevention, and intensive case management. The sheriff’s office confirms that services are offered to the public promptly and professionally. The division consists of;

Jail Operation Division 

The jail operation division commander is in charge of operating and coordinating the division. The jail division is responsible for offering inmates a safe and humane environment, protecting them from victimization within the facility, and providing access to a system of due process internal to the facility. Other duties include ensuring public safety by offering professionally managed jail service to inmates according to judgments of the courts, protecting the public and staff, provide the court with pertinent details and effective services for use in pre-sentencing processes and decisions. 

Civil Process Division 

The division is responsible for serving the civil process within Gwinnett County. The civil process includes divorce, child support, actions, garnishment, evictions, and statements of claim. In addition, the civil process division is in charge of executing probate court orders to apprehend. The rankings are usually issued to get a person involuntarily evaluated by a mental health professional. 

Criminal Investigation Division 

The criminal investigation division performs follow-up investigations into specific crimes reported to the sheriff’s office and jail. The criminal investigation division consists of ten units, each assigned to investigate different crimes. The units are the Pawn unit, Burglary unit, Cold case unit, Electronic and Financial crimes unit, Homicide unit, General investigation unit, Metal theft unit, Robbery unit, Motor vehicle theft unit, and the Special victim unit.
