Grady County, founded on August 17, 1905, is situated in the U.S state of Georgia. This county is named after Henry W. Grady, the editor of the Atlanta Constitution and noted orator. Cairo County is the county seat of Grady County, while its adjacent counties include Mitchell County, Thomas County, Leon County, Gadsden County, and Decatur County. 

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 460 square miles (1200km), of which 455 square miles (1180km) is land, while water occupies 5.7 square miles (15km) (1.2%). Most of Grady County, centered on Cairo, is located on the upper Ochlocknee River sub-basin of the larger Ochlocknee basin. The county’s northwestern corner is situated at the lower Flint River sub-basin of the ACF River basin. 

According to the 2020 United States Census, the county has 26236 citizens, 9136 households, and 6320 families. In addition, the county’s racial composition includes African Americans 27.77%, White 56.09%, Native American 0.34%, Asians 0.42%, Pacific Islanders 0.02%, Other mixed races 2.89% and Hispanic or Latino 12.48%. 

Grady County Sheriff’s Office 

Sheriff Harry heads the sheriff’s office in Grady County. The office’s goal is to protect and service the citizens of Grady County. In addition, the office focuses on providing an optimum level of service to the public for justice to be applied with integrity and compassion. Moreover, the mission of the sheriff’s office is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens by remaining committed to continuing professional management of the Grady County sheriff’s office and jail through progressive leadership. 

Criminal Investigations Division 

The Grady County sheriff’s office criminal investigation division is a full-service unit that investigates a wide area of crime crimes occurring in Grady County. Each investigator has special training in a particular location within the criminal investigation field. The training consists of financial crimes, narcotics, child abuse, burglary, forensic computer examinations, and robbery and death investigations. In addition, the criminal investigation division collaborates with other Federal, State, and Local agencies, such as the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. 

Uniform Patrol 

The Uniform Patrol Division is the pillar of the office as well as the law enforcement agency. The deputies patrol the street and neighborhoods of Grady County 24 hours. The staffs in this division are the first interaction citizens have with the office and respond to various types of services. In addition, the division is responsible for serving civil papers including but not limited to;  warrants, delinquencies, divorce, subpoenas for court cases, restraining orders, and other different notices requiring civil service. Moreover, the division is in charge of executing all criminal warrants for arrest in Grady County, as well as courtroom security in all courts, juvenile and magistrate. The patrol division is in charge of covering an area of 460.34 square miles with 12 full-time sworn deputies, three deputies per shift. 

Correction Division 

The Grady County sheriff’s office is dedicated to protecting the public by humanly housing offenders arrested for jailable crimes under the Georgia code. The law requires that the inmates are well maintained, take two hot meals per day and have the option of getting from the A&S Commissary any snack food and personal hygiene. The sheriff’s office offers various programs to inmates, allowing them to gain new skills that will help them after finishing their sentence.
