Gilmer County is situated in the North Central portion of the U.S state of Georgia. The County was founded in 1932 and named after George Rockingham Gilmer, an American politician who served two non-consecutive periods as the 34th Governor of Georgia. Ellijay is the county seat of Gilmer County, while the adjacent counties are Fannin County, Dawson County, Pickens County, Gordon County, and Murray County. According to the 2010 United States Census, 28292 people, 11314 households, and 8000 families live in this County. In addition, the population density is 66.3 inhabitants per square mile (25.6km) and 16564 housing sections at a total average density of 38.8 per square mile (150km). On the other hand, the racial makeup of the County was 92.3%, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.1 Pacific Islander, and 5.2% from other races. 

Data obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau show that Gilmer County has a total area of 431 square miles (1120km), of which 427 square miles (1110km) is land, while water occupies 4.7 square miles (12km) (1.1%). Ninety percent of the land in Gilmer County is in cropland and forest, while poultry keeping and processing make up the most significant portion of the agricultural economy. 

About Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office 

Gilmer County sheriff’s office is located at 1 Broad St, Ellijay, 30540, GA, and is headed by Stacy L.Nicholson. The office is a law enforcement agency managing Gilmer County jails and inmates and promoting public peace and safety through policing. Moreover, the office is tasked with patrolling areas not within the jurisdiction of the local police department. On the other hand, the office is responsible for managing local court orders and judgments, including tax delinquencies, foreclosures, and repossessions. 

Civil Process Division 

The Georgia Sheriff’s Association formed the civil process division to promote basic and advanced training in the field of the civil process as well as increase the networking capabilities between those deputies whose main job is the service of civil process. The division offers technical assistance to sheriff’s offices regarding civil process service, disseminates civil process information, assists with problems involving compliance with the law, and facilitates the standardization of civil process statewide through the Georgia Sheriff’s Association. 

Jail Management 

The operational responsibility of the county jail is the primary duty of the sheriff’s office. Patrol Division

The patrol division is responsible for assisting citizens in need of services, apprehension of law violators, and traffic coordination. In addition, the patrol division is in charge of responding to calls for service dispatched and preparing reports on actions taken or other documentation needed for prosecution purposes. 

Investigation Division 

The investigation division is in charge of the investigation of all crimes committed within unincorporated areas of Gilmer County. Other duties executed by the investigation division include arresting criminals, executing warrants, processing and documenting crime scenes, and assisting other law enforcement agencies within the County that may require some help in investigating significant crimes. Within the division, there are subsections: General Investigation, Special Investigation Unit, and Civil Process Unit.
