Emanuel County was established following a Georgia General Assembly act on December 10, 1812. The county was created from parts of Bulloch and Montgomery counties and was named in honor of David Emanuel, a former governor of Georgia. This became Georgia’s thirty-ninth county. Later, the county gave parts for the creation of Johnson (1858), Jenkins (1905), Toombs (1905), Candler (1914), and Treutlen (1918) counties.

The county has a total area of 690 square miles, of which 681 square miles is land and 9.6 square miles is water. It is home to 22,768 people living in 8,387 households, with 5,683 families as of the 2020 United States Census.

Emanuel County has been Republican since 1964 and has its county seat at Swainsboro.

Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office

The Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office is located at 125 South Main Street, Swainsboro, Georgia, 30401. The sheriff is the county’s officially elected and legally appointed chief law enforcement officer, and this office is the county’s primary law enforcement agency. The Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) works per the OCGA 15-16-10; ideally, it maintains peace and order and upholds the law.

The office has the responsibility of serving the residents of the county as they are the ones who appoint their sheriff and pay taxes to ensure that they receive quality, efficient, and effective services. ECSO is responsible for;

  • Guarding the lives, persons, property, health, and morals of the populace.
  • Making sure that any taxes that may be owed to the state under any laws are collected and that anyone found breaking any of the state’s tax rules faces legal action.
  • Confiscating and destroying any illegal and harmful substances within the county.
  • Directing any county’s child support offenders’ diversion program.
  • Obtaining notification of each individual on parole.
  • Restoring all precious metals merchants.
  • Conducting background checks and fingerprinting services.
  • Keeping, maintaining, and updating the sex offender registry.

On top of these responsibilities, the sheriff’s office has various units that deal with specific matters. These include the following;

Courts Services Unit

This unit is primarily responsible for ensuring courthouse and courtroom security. This includes judges, witnesses, the general public, suspects, and the records room. It also issues court orders such as arrest warrants and evictions.

Corrections Unit

The Emanuel County jail is run by the ECSO-Corrections Unit, which effectively protects and secures staff, volunteers, visitors, and convicts. This unit is also responsible for maintaining jail and inmate records of all inmates in the county detention facilities. Again, it transfers inmates to other jails and transports them to and from the court.

Special Investigations Unit

SIU Investigates murders, break-ins, human trafficking, drugs, and narcotics offenses. They are also in charge of profiling, protecting, gathering, documenting, and evaluating crime scenes and evidence. This unit also conducts interrogations with suspects and witnesses while building a case.

Emanuel County Inmate Search

ECSO maintains a medium-security facility located at 769 Kite Road (GA Hwy 57 West), Swainsboro, GA 30401, that incarcerates individuals from all over Emanuel County. The jail is the biggest county jail in the county and thus acts as the primary hub for all inmates. This includes those charged with violating county ordinances and state, federal, and national laws.

The ECSO-Corrections Unit is responsible for caring for all these inmates and keeping their records. They record their names on a jail register for daily and interval roll calls. The jail roster is available online to the public, who can access it as they wish. On the register, they can view all the names, personal information, criminal records, arrest, and physical description of all these inmates.

How to find an inmate imprisoned in Emanuel County

ESCO-detentions unit maintains the jail roster online, accessible to the general public in various ways. You can access the register through the ECSO official website and Third-party websites. The register is searchable by the names of the inmate. However, note that the information you acquire from third-party websites may sometimes differ from the original ones from the ECSO website.

The online inmate register is grouped in letters of the inmate’s first name; thus, to locate an inmate using the register, you must seek the first letter of their name. You can tap on the letter, which will expand to all the inmates with a name beginning with the letter. On the name of the inmates, you can see all criminal, arrest, and personal records.

If you cannot find the inmate’s name on the register, you can call the jail by phone at 478-237-8771 and request the administration to perform an inmate search on your behalf. However, you need to give the details of the inmate you seek to find. Again, you can visit the jail and request an innate search in person.

Finally, if you cannot locate the inmate through the above methods, you can visit the GA statewide inmate search database, searchable by the inmate’s full name or prisoner ID.

Sex Offender Search

If the inmate you seek to find is a sex offender, the chances of getting them on the Emanuel Sex Offender Registry are high. The ECSO-sex offender registry is searchable by name and geographical location. In this case, too, you can call the ECSO by phone and request these records by mail or collect them in person at a fee.
