Echols County is located in the southeastern part of Georgia. The county was established on December 13, 1858, following an act by the Georgia General Assembly. It was created from portions of Clinch County and Lowndes County in the southwest and southeast. 

The county was named in honor of Robert Milner Echols. After spending 20 years in the state legislature, Echols led troops in the Mexican War (1846–48). 

The county has a total area of 421 square miles, of which 415 square miles is land and 5.8 square miles is water. It is home to 3,697 residents, 1,561 households, and 1,097 families as of the 2020 Census. 

The county utilizes Statenville as the county seat, an unincorporated town, making it one of the only three counties in Georgia with an unincorporated county seat. The county is part of the Valdosta, Georgia, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

  • Maintain an execution docket in which it must record a thorough account of each execution presented, the dates on which it was delivered, and any steps it took in response. 
  • Perform and provide copies of fingerprinting and criminal background checks. 
  • Issue out the arrest, eviction, and writs warrants and notices. 
  • Create and implement a detailed security strategy for the county courthouse, annexes, county municipals, and unincorporated areas. 
  • Take possession of purchasers and grant titles to purchasers at their predecessor’s sales. 
  • Carry out any levies or arrests made by a predecessor.

Echols County Inmate Search 

The Echols County sheriff’s office maintains a medium-security adult facility, the Echols County Jail, in Statenville. The 138-bed facility has been used since 1975 and counts 988 reservations yearly.
