Dougherty County is located in the southwestern part of Georgia. The country was established on December 15, 1853, by the Georgia General Assembly from a portion of Baker County. Later, more pieces were added from Small and Worth Counties in 1854 and 1856.

It was named Dougherty in honor of Charles Dougherty, a distinguished Georgian jurist and judge from Athens. The county has its headquarters in Albany, the only incorporated city. The county is part of the Albany, Georgia, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 335 square miles, of which 329 square miles is land and 5.9 square miles is water. It has 32,630 homes with 32,630 individuals, 18,213 families, and 85,790 people as of the 2020 United States Census.

Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office

The Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is located at 225 Pine Avenue, Albany, Georgia, 3170, and its primary responsibilities include law enforcement, the courts, and the prison. DCSO must;

  • Uphold the law impartially and without bias.
  • Provide visitors with the greatest security available.
  • Treat all prison detainees humanely, respectfully, and with dignity.

DCSO has various units to ensure it pays back the trust that the Dougherty County residents put in the office. These units work independently and together with other departments to be effective and efficient. They include;

Field Operations Division

Under Major Ken Faust, this division is the heart of DCSO, including the Judicial Support Division, the Criminal Investigations Unit, and the Uniform Division (civil, warrants, and patrol).

Support Services Unit: This division handles all personnel, financial, and purchasing matters for the DCSO.

Uniform Division:

  • Civil unit; serves documents from the Dougherty County Clerk of Court, Magistrate Court, Probate Court, and other civil courts. They include subpoenas, divorce documents, complaints, petitions, protective orders, claims statements, writs/levies, garnishments, and warrants. It also maintains order during court hearings, handles the monthly sheriff’s auction, and issues tickets.
  • Patrol Division; enforces municipal, state, and federal laws in the county. It responds to all emergency calls and traffic control and deals with traffic offenses and county patrols on residential and commercial properties. This unit helps other divisions execute civil papers and court orders.
  • Warranty Division; serves Dougherty County with arrest warrants. It aids local and national transportation, extradition of wanted persons, and disaster relief. This division assists the police department, court security, and civil division.

Crime Prevention and Intervention Unit (CPIU)

CPIU is entrusted with minimizing crime in the community by conducting continual educational initiatives. This unit mentors, counsels, advises and instructs Dougherty County youth aged 6 to 17, assisting them with academic or social issues at school or home.

The goal is to warn kids about the hazards and/or ramifications of making bad choices concerning relationships, drugs, gangs, and strangers, and how to manage gangs, drugs, and the internet.

Others include the detention unit, communications unit, and registration of secondary metals recyclers. For more information concerning DCSO and its services, contact the office at 229-431-2166, fax 229-431-2185, or visit its official website.

Dougherty Inmate Search

DCSO manages a 1,230-bed pre-trial detention facility at 1302 Evelyn Avenue in Albany, Georgia. The jail’s mission is to treat convicts fairly and compassionately, to offer a clean and healthy environment for inmates, employees, and visitors, and to continuously maintain a high degree of safety and security using modern, widely acknowledged detention management techniques.

With that, the jail has adapted to modern technology and maintains an online inmate list that allows the public to view inmate, prison, and arrest records.

How to use the online inmate list

Using the online inmate list available on the DCSO official website is very simple. The list is searchable by first and last name. The only essential information you need is the inmate’s name, date of birth, charges, date of arrest or incarceration, and physical description such as height, tattoos, sex, and race.

All this information guarantees that the individual you seek is the one you find in the search results. Nonetheless, you can view the inmates’ mugshots on the list and the names, so locating them is simple.

Moreover, you can search the Georgia Statewide Inmate search page to locate your inmate. The database shows the results of all inmates in the Georgia Prison System, including those in the state, federal, and other county jails. In addition, you can search the GA DOC inmate search to see whether the inmate is in a state facility or the FBOP inmate lookup tool if you suspect they might be in federal prison.

Again, you can utilize third-party websites available online, but their information is not guaranteed that their records are accurate as the DCSO does not affiliate with them.

What if you don’t have access to the internet?

If you cannot access the online platforms to perform an inmate search, you can always contact the Dodge County jail or sheriff’s office at 229-431-2166 or fax 229-431-2185. You can give out the inmate’s name, other personal information, and physical description through the phone.

Finally, you can always visit the jail lobby to seek the individual you wish to find in person.

Sex Offender Search

The DCSO maintains an up-to-date sex offender registry for all sex offenders living, visiting, working, or schooling in the county. You can also contact DCSO by phone at 229-431-2166 or fax at 229-431-2185 to request these records by mail, in person, or by email.
