About the County

Crisp County is in the south-central part of Georgia. The area was part of Dooly County until 1905 when the residents petitioned to form a new county. The Georgia Legislature obliged and named it for Charles Crisp, a former statesman and the General Assembly Speaker between 1891 and 1894. Authorities also settled on Cordele as the county seat.

The early inhabitants of the area were the Creek Indians. However, Spanish visitors began accessing the area as early as 1540, but the relationship between the two communities wasn’t harmonious. Consequently, the Creeks and English collaborated to fight the invaders in 1702. The former group won, gaining control of the area and the Mississippi Valley.

Railroads began arriving in the county as early as 1880. To date, it remains a significant contributor to the county’s economy through the transportation of manufactured goods and the movement of investors into the area.

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 20,128 people, a 16.95% decrease from 2010. The report further shows that the county covers 281 square miles.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office has a mission to provide a safe environment where residents can stay, work, and raise their families. It aims to achieve this goal through adherence to the law while providing platforms where people can air their concerns.

The office dates back to 18th November 1905, when the first Crisp County Sheriff took the oath of Office. He assumed this role through an appointment and served for three years. Afterward, the county residents got the chance to vote for their preferred representative, Sheriff John Henry Ward.

The current Sheriff, Billy Hancock, assumed office in 2014. He strives to achieve the goal of community protection using several programs, with the most common ones including:

C.H.A.M.P.S Program

C.H.A.M.P.S is a statewide program that has been in existence since 2003. It aims to educate the youths on how to make safe and sound life decisions. To enroll, interested parties should go to the Crisp Academy or the Crisp County Elementary Schools. Successful candidates graduate and receive awards, including those who win the Essay and Poster contest.

Crime Stopper

This is an international program that has high success rates in crime prevention and elimination. The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office employs this program to get direct tips and notifications from county residents on planned criminal activities. All participants remain anonymous, but individuals whose tips result in crime prevention or the arrest of gang members receive awards. Usually, the awards are in monetary value.

Interested individuals can do so through this link.

CodeRED Program

Through various emergency response agencies, the system allows Crisp County to offer faster call rates and message delivery. Its benefit is that it keeps you updated on possible emergencies that are likely to affect you.

Individuals and businesses can register for the codeRED system here. Notably, it’s geographically based, meaning you must include your street address before you key in your phone number.

Apart from the above programs, several divisions make the Sheriff’s work easier, including:

Animal Services Division

The section is under the leadership of a Sergeant who adheres to county laws and ordinances relating to caring for animals. Some of the division’s responsibilities include:

  • Attending to Sick or Injured Animals
  • Investigating Reports on Animal Cruelty
  • Documenting and Investigating Animal Bites
  • Ensuring Owners Comply with Rabies Control Measures

Criminal Investigations Division

This section is responsible for investigating all criminal activities in the county. A Lieutenant heads the division and oversees the investigation of the following common felonies:

  • Murder
  • Manslaughter
  • Statutory rape
  • Fraud Cases

County Inmate Search

Crisp County Detention Center remains the county’s primary correctional facility. It houses offenders from within the county and the neighboring communities, primarily those awaiting trial in the local courts. Other times, the jail may house inmates awaiting community reentry from the Department of Corrections or Federal Prisons.

After the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act, correctional facilities and various agencies were required to make offender information easily accessible to the general public. In compliance, Crisp County provides the following inmate search processes:

  • Via the Sheriff’s Office
  • Via the Detention Center

The first option requires interested individuals to contact the Sheriff’s Office directly or via call. The office maintains a jail roster containing names of currently incarcerated individuals. If you opt to call, do so via this no 229-276-2600. Ensure you know the inmate’s name for easy information retrieval.

Alternatively, you can review the jail roster by visiting the Crisp County Detention Center at 196 GA-300, Cordele, GA 31015. You can also call the jail at 229-276-2646 and inquire.

The following is the offender information available on the jail roster:

  • Name
  • Booking Date
  • Reasons for Arrest
  • Possible Release Date
  • Bond Amount

Sex Offender Search

Crisp County maintains a sex offender registry in compliance with state regulations. This is a database containing information on the county’s sex offenders, and the responsibility of registering them falls under the purview of the Criminal Investigations Division.

The website contains the following search options:

  • In Your Area
  • Name
  • City
  • Non-Compliant
  • Phone Number
  • Internet Names

Utilize the “In Your Area” option for a general search. It lets you know the names, mugshots, and other details of sex offenders in a particular area. As a result, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from them.

The other options follow similar criteria, except for the non-compliant one, which lists names and information on offenders who defy registration requirements.
