About the County

Crawford County is in the west-central part of Georgia. The area was part of Houston County until December 1822, when a General Assembly’s Act directed the formation of a new county. Authorities named it for William Harris Crawford, a former US Senator.

The area’s initial inhabitants began arriving as early as 1803, and they built a compound on the Flint River. This compound was five square miles with a plantation and a shop. Today, this piece of land is the Creek Agency Reserve.

The county seat, Knoxville, was formed and incorporated on the Federal Road. This was the main telegraph route from Washington DC to New Orleans, a major contributing factor to the town’s selection as the county seat. The city has retained its status, although it lost its incorporation status. Additionally, some cities like Roberta have overtaken Knoxville as the chief center of population.

As of 2020, the county’s population was 12,130, a 4.75% decrease from 2010. The United States Census Bureau further shows that the county covers 326 square miles, 325 of it being the land area.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Sheriff’s Office is under the leadership of Lewis S. Walker, who has been in that position since 2008. The Sheriff’s goal is crime elimination to create a safe environment for the residents and visitors. To achieve this goal, several divisions are specialized to perform specific duties for efficiency and effectiveness.

Communications Division

All calls by public members to the Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department go through the Communications Division. The office operates 24 hours a day throughout the week to respond to all calls, particularly emergencies. A Captain heads the division and works with the help of six dispatchers.

Notably, the division is also responsible for directing officers to the location of emergencies.

Civil and Courts Division

This section of the Sheriff’s Office offers various services to the county courts. For instance, the Civil Unit serves civil papers, including warrants and eviction notices. Additionally, the officers conduct the evictions and arrest those who fail to obey court orders.

The Courts Unit aims to protect the courts before, during, and after proceedings by installing metal detectors and other safety systems to scan people accessing the court buildings. They are also responsible for perimeter security and organizing inmate transportation from the county jail for court proceedings.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division responds to Communications Division’s calls, messages, and directives. The following are the division’s leaders:

  • Captain (1)
  • Lieutenants (2)
  • Deputies (8)

It is the most visible component of the Sheriff’s Office as the officers are uniformed and spend most of their time interacting with the community members. Other responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with Inmate Transportation and Court Security
  • Responding to Domestic Violence Cases
  • Traffic Control and Investigating Road Accidents

The officers are also responsible for establishing positive ties between the community and law enforcement.

Investigations Division

The Investigations Division conducts criminal investigations for crimes that happen within Crawford County. The officers undergo special training and have unique equipment and gear to help them through their cases. The process begins with victims reporting criminal activities, after which officers review the incident reports.

Not all cases qualify for investigation by this division. Usually, it deals with felony cases and forwards misdemeanors to the Patrol Division.

The Lead Investigator may interview victims and witnesses to gather more information regarding a case. They may also go back to the crime scene for further analysis.

You can communicate with the division via this email address.

County Inmate Search

Crawford County Jail is the primary correctional facility in the county. It houses male and female offenders serving medium-term sentences for crimes committed within the county. There are also cases where the Georgia Department of Corrections contracts with the facility to house offenders awaiting community reentry.

The inmate search process in Crawford County is a bit complex as there’s no online jail roster. Instead, interested parties can only learn about the whereabouts of their loved ones through the Sheriff’s Office. You can visit and review the roster or call the office at (478) 836-3116. Whichever the case, ensure you know the offender’s full name.

Notably, the roster is up-to-date but may be unreliable as some inmates falsify their personal details, including names and dates of birth.

Sex Offender Search

Crawford County, through the Sheriff’s Office, maintains information on sex offenders. This data also contains information on registrants not in custody. Doing so allows them to comply with registration requirements, including, but not limited to, updating their permanent residences. The Sex Offender Act classifies a permanent residence as a place where a person stays or resides for two consecutive weeks.

The offender search website has the following search categories:

  • In Your Area
  • Name
  • Non-Compliant
  • Phone Number
  • Internet Names

The “In Your Area” option requires you to search based on a certain address. It is most accurate where you want to know whether a particular area has registrants.

The Name Search option allows you to provide an offender’s first and last name. You can decide to input both names together or utilize just one of the options, although the latter will give broad results. The other options work the same way as the name search.

A comprehensive statewide sex offender search process is possible via the Georgia Sex Offender Registry.
