About the County
Coweta County is in the west-central part of Georgia, bordering Carroll, Fayette, Troup, and Heard Counties. The area was part of the Creek Indian lands until 1825, when authorities introduced the Treaty of Indian Springs, forcing Chief William McIntosh to relinquish it to the United States. The Georgia Legislature named the county in honor of McIntosh’s tribe and town.
The county’s first seat was Bullsboro, but it lacked good road and rail connections to facilitate easy movement and settlement. As a result, authorities opted for Newnan, located two miles west of Bullboro. This town became the county’s central economic hub, attracting more communities and settlements.
By 1860, farming, mainly plantations and farms, was the primary income-generating activity. However, the Civil War led to the introduction of the textile industry, resulting in the setting up of the county’s first cotton industry in 1866.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has 146,158 people, a 17.8% increase from 2010. The report further shows that the county covers 446 square miles, 441 of it being the land area.
About the County Sheriff’s Office
Coweta County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s primary law enforcement authority under the leadership of a Sheriff. Primarily, the office aims to adhere to local, state, and national laws while meeting its mandate of community protection.
The Following divisions assist the Sheriff in performing his duties:
Patrol Division
This division offers first-hand law enforcement services by receiving and responding to emergency and distress calls. Individuals can contact the office for help at (770) 253-1502 from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. If your case is an emergency or falls beyond the stipulated timelines, dial 911.
Other responsibilities of the department include:
- Traffic Control and Conducting Investigations about Road Accidents
- Improving the Ties between the Community and Law Enforcement Officers
- Patrol Duties to Keep the Streets and Communities Safe
Criminal Investigation Division
The Criminal Investigation Division investigates offenses committed in the county. The initial investigation step is where victims and witnesses report a case to the Sheriff’s Office. The authorities review each case, and the ones that meet the investigation criteria are assigned to a lead investigator.
Notably, the office pays more attention to felonies rather than misdemeanors. Nonetheless, it doesn’t discriminate against any case as long as it meets the set criteria.
Individuals interested in learning about their cases’ progress can inquire through the Sheriff’s Office reception center.
Court Services Division
The Court Services Division comprises several units, namely Civil, Transport, and Warrant. The Civil Unit is responsible for drafting and serving various court documents from within and outside jurisdictions. Some of the unit’s specific roles include carrying out evictions and issuing Writs of Possession.
The Transport Unit is responsible for organizing inmate transportation from the county jail for court proceedings. The officers in this unit also provide courtroom security during court proceedings.
The responsibility of the Warrant Unit is to issue warrants and make arrests. They also follow up on individuals who disregard the warrants and present them before the court.

The Records Custodian receives all open record requests in the county. Interested individuals email the office here or send mail to the following address:

County Inmate Search
The Coweta County Jail is the main correctional facility in the county. It is under the management of the Sheriff’s Office and houses male and female offenders awaiting trial and those serving medium-term sentences.
As the primary county’s jail, it allows public members to learn about their loved ones’ whereabouts through an online jail roster. It contains information on current inmates and is accessible through this link.
The names on the roster are alphabetically arranged, meaning you’ll have to scroll through to find the offender you’re looking for. You can also utilize the name search option, where you input the offender’s last name or conjunction of first and last name. Using both names gives more accurate results.
Alternatively, you can visit the Sheriff’s Office and review the physical jail roster or call the office directly. Whichever the case, ensure you know the inmate’s full name for a successful search.
Sex Offender Search
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation maintains information on sex offenders in the state through the sex offender registry. Keeping tabs on the offenders is necessary to ensure they comply with registration requirements, which require them to report to the authorities occasionally. Additionally, they must provide information on their residences and any other place they can spend time for more than a stipulated time. Doing so is a precautionary measure to protect the community, particularly children.
You can conduct a sex offender search through this link and choose one of the search options available. These options include:
- Name
- County
- City and Street
- Zip Code
The website also allows you to narrow the search by indicating the offender’s gender and race.
If you’re looking for offenders within a particular area, choose the county while specifying the city, street, and zip code. Afterward, you can narrow the results by indicating the radius from the provided address. This way, the search results will show all sex offenders within the particular area.
When using the name search option, input the offender’s first and last name together for more accurate results.
