About the County

Colquitt County is located in the southern part of Georgia. Initially, it was part of Thomas and Lowndes Counties before Georgia Legislature intervened in 1856. The General Assembly drafted an Act responsible for creating a new county from the aforementioned ones and named it for Walter Terry Colquitt. He was a former attorney, judge, and Georgia’s Senate Representative.

After the county’s formation, various communities settled in the area, forming multiple towns. The initial ones were Greenfield and Moultrie, but the former is no longer extant. Other towns include Berlin, Doerun, and Riverside, among others. Authorities settled on Moultrie as the county seat.

Over the years, the county has had four courthouses. Fire destroyed the second courthouse in 1881, prompting authorities to replace it with a temporary structure. The current one was built in 1902 but underwent continuous remodeling and expansion.

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 45,898 people, a 1 % increase from 2010.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office is the county’s primary law enforcement authority. The department’s mission is to eliminate crime and provide a secure environment where people can live peacefully and in harmony.

The Sheriff, the office’s head, works with the help of various divisions and units. Each division performs specific functions and duties, promoting effectiveness and efficiency. They include:

The Patrol Division

The Patrol Division comprises patrol officers who spend most of their time in the streets offering security to the community members. It’s the most visible Sheriff’s Office section and is under the leadership of a Lieutenant who works with the help of Sergeants. Besides protecting the streets, the officers aim to improve the relationship between law enforcement authorities and community members. Additionally, the deputies within the Patrol Division are responsible for investigating traffic accidents in the county.

The Domestic Violence Section

This section is part of the Patrol Division. It investigates domestic violence, including servicing warrants and restraining orders. The Sheriff established the unit because of the alarming increase in domestic violence incidents.

Individuals can report domestic violence matters by calling the Patrol Division at 229-616-7430.

Criminal Investigations Division

This section of the Sheriff’s Office conducts investigations on criminal activities in the county. The cases it focuses on are the complex ones beyond the purview of the Patrol Division. Officers in the division have unique gear and equipment to investigate and analyze evidence efficiently. Additionally, they undergo refresher training annually to keep them at par with technological advancements.

Some of the cases the office investigates include:

  • Financial Fraud
  • Statutory Rape
  • Domestic Violence Cases Resulting in Murder and Manslaughter

The lead investigator reviews incident reports during the investigation process and may visit the crime scene for further scrutiny.

You can contact the division at 229-616-7460 and speak to an investigator. The officer will give you a contact number via which he will communicate your case progress.

Court Services Division

The Colquitt County Court Services Division offers protection and maintenance services. To achieve the protection goal, the officers install metal detectors and other electronic detection systems at the courthouse. They also organize inmate transportation from the county jail to the court and back. During court proceedings, this division’s deputies ensure the inmates remain orderly.

County Inmate Search

Colquitt County Jail is Colquitt County’s main correctional facility. The facility was built in the early 1900 and has a current inmate capacity of 71, and houses offenders serving short and medium-term sentences. It also holds individuals awaiting trial or sentencing.

According to the Freedom of Information Act, offender information must be accessible to the general public. In compliance, Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office maintains a jail roster containing information on current jail inmates. Interested individuals can access it by visiting the office or calling 229-616-7430 for assistance.

Notably, the information on the roster shouldn’t be relied upon entirely without speaking with the Sheriff directly. This is because the office updates it after several hours, meaning the information can be misleading. Additionally, some offenders may provide false information during admission into the facility.

Sex Offender Search

Sex offenses rank among the worst crimes, not only in the United States but also worldwide. As a result, states have drafted strict measures to help deal with sex offenders, with Georgia requiring some of them to register for years or life. Registration is a system that keeps tabs on sex offenders after their release from custody.

Georgia Bureau of Investigations maintains a sex offender registry containing information on all sex offenders in the state. The registry is accessible through an online website that has several search options, including:

  • Name Search
  • Offender Type
  • City and Street
  • County
  • Race
  • Incarceration Status (In custody or Released)
  • Zip Code
  • Distance from the Zip Code

The best option when looking for offenders in a particular area in Colquitt County is using the city, street, and zip code searches. Then, you can indicate the distance from the zip code address, allowing you to get information on sex offenders within a particular radius.

The name search is only appropriate if you’re looking for a specific offender. You can input the offender’s full name or opt for separate first and last name searches.

The website also contains information on absconders. These are sex offenders who fail to comply with the state’s registration requirements, and authorities deem them a safety hazard.
