About the County

Cobb County is in the northwest part of Georgia within the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. The county was part of Cherokee Indian lands until 1832, when the state legislature carved out ten counties from the land, with Cobb County being one of them. Authorities named it for Thomas Willis Cobb, a former Superior Court Judge in Greensboro.

The initial settlers in the county shunned away from large-scale plantations but instead focused on small subsistence farms. However, the movement of Cherokees from the area to western territories in 1838 opened opportunities for towns and settlements to develop. By 1850, Marietta, the county seat, had numerous hotels and was a popular summer destination for people from the coastal states of Georgia and South Carolina seeking a cooler, healthier environment.

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 766,149 people, a 13.6% increase from 2010. The report further shows that the county covers 354 square miles, 340 being the land area and the rest being water.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The mission of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is to enforce the law professionally, fairly, and impartially. The ultimate goal is to create a safe environment for community members to effectively and efficiently perform their duties. The Sheriff is the office’s head who works with the help of several divisions and units, including:

The Civil Section

The work of drafting and serving civil procedures from the county courts and those from other jurisdictions falls within the purview of the Civil Section. The division executes court orders, such as:

  • Evictions
  • Issuing Writs of Possession
  • Collecting Court Judgments

However, the Civil Section Officers do not force people out of the houses during evictions. Instead, they humanely organize the activities with dignity and respect.

The Court Security Division

Georgia Statutes indicate that County Sheriffs are responsible for providing the security of courts and their surroundings. Some of the specific duties they perform include:

  • Performing Annual Security Screenings in the Judicial Complex
  • Protecting the Courtroom’s Perimeters
  • Responding to and Thwarting Protests Directed to the Courthouses

Additionally, the officers help the courtroom staff in arranging paperwork in readiness for proceedings.

The K-9 Team

The K-9s are crucial parts of the Sheriff’s Office. They assist officers in detecting narcotics while aiding in tracking offenders from their hideouts. The handlers of the canines undergo specialized training and certification and work under the direction of the SWAT Team Commander. Additionally, the team conducts regular searches for explosives, primarily on the Judicial Complex and stadiums.

The Fingerprinting Section

Fingerprinting services are necessary for various reasons, including adoption, job application, and application for permits. Individuals interested in these services can go to the Fingerprinting Section at 185 Roswell Street, Marietta, Georgia. The office is open for business from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm.

Note that the Sheriff’s Office provides fingerprint cards to children at no cost. However, adults must pay $10 for up to three cards.

Sheriff Sales

The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office oversees public sales in the county. The commonly sold items are foreclosures, but there are also other items stipulated by law. Georgia Statutes set the time of sale, usually on the first Tuesday of the month. However, a Marshal’s Sale takes place on the first Monday of the month, with the office advertising them to create public awareness.

County Inmate Search

The main correctional facility in Cobb County is the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. It houses pretrial inmates and those serving time for various felonies and misdemeanors. The Sheriff oversees the office’s operations with the help of jail staff.

The best way to locate an inmate in the county is through the online jail roster on the Sheriff’s website. There are two search options: SOID Number and Name. When using the latter option, begin with the last name and then the first name.

Use the “In Custody” option to search for someone you know currently in the Cobb County Adult Detention Centre. However, opt for the “Inquiry” tab if you’re uncertain. While doing so, remember that using the “Inquiry” tab will significantly increase the results generation time. Either way, the SOID Number search will generate quicker and more accurate results.

Alternatively, individuals can visit the Sheriff’s Office and review the jail roster or call the office at 770-499-4600.

Inmate Search via the Department of Correction’s Website

Sometimes, inmates may be transferred from the county jail to state-run facilities. Usually, this transfer happens after a judge rules on a pending case where an inmate awaiting trial receives a sentence whose terms can only be offered at the state level. Other times, an offender’s security level may change, prompting the Sheriff to recommend a transfer. However, the Sheriff must prove to the court that it’s impossible to meet the offender’s security needs at the county level.

The Department of Corrections maintains an online inmate search website. It contains information on all offenders in state prisons, including where they’re specifically incarcerated. The website has two search options: Name and ID/Case Number.

The Name Search allows you to provide the offender’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. You may also go for the partial name search, where you input the first few letters of the inmate’s name. However, the search results will be broad and inaccurate.

The ID/Case Number Search option is the most accurate as each number identifies a particular individual.
